Suction devices operate by drawing oil through a restricted openingdesigned to limit the quantity of water drawn in with the oil. The system consist of an inlet head, apump and a storage tank. The inlet head should be positioned so that oil can enter but water isexcluded, but this is not always possible because oil layer thickness varies and waves can swampthe head.
