POSTER ABSTRACTSP1016. POSTER SESSION IIDemystifying Kepler Data: A Beginner's GuideJoshua Pepper (1), Karen Kinemuchi (2), Martin Still (2), Michael Fanelli (2), Thomas Barclay (2)(1) Vanderbilt University (2) NASA Ames Research Center & Bay Area Environmental Research Institutejoshua.pepper.v@vanderbilt.eduKepler is producing the best photometric data ever recorded. However, the sheer detail of thedata, combined with the technical challenges and characteristics of a space-based mission, hasresulted in a data set and accompanying metadata that can be difficult for astronomers who areused to ground-based photometry to start working with. The extensive Kepler documentationdoes not offer an easy place to begin learning how to employ the Kepler lightcurves. Our paperis designed to be a useful primer for the average astronomer to understand the characteristicsand capabilities of the Kepler data, metadata, mission, documentation, and websites.2011 Kepler Science Conference - NASA Ames Research Center 219
