Corporate Social Responsibility43Charity and the communityOur total charitable donations for 2005 amounted to£462,000. All UK employees are encouraged to take partin fundraising initiatives for charity and the community andin 2005, <strong>JLT</strong> matched pound for pound monies raisedand the Company’s contributions exceeded £58,000.In 2005 those ‘matching’ initiatives included a sponsoredrow from the source of the River Thames to Tower Bridgeby two of our Partners in our Risk & Insurance business insupport of The Prostate Cancer Charity, The Royal BritishLegion and West London Action for Children. Liz O’Keefefrom our Corporate Risks office in Southampton took partin the Atlantic Rowing Race from La Gomera to Antigua insupport of Sail4Cancer. David Hickman, the Group’sCompany Secretary, took part in the 710km RaidPyrenean bike ride in support of Save the Children.We are enormously proud of all of our staff who havetaken part in charity related events during 2005.In the UK, the Group is a ‘Business in the Community’partner and a member of ‘London Cares’. In January2006 <strong>JLT</strong> hosted a breakfast for London Cares to supporttheir corporate recruitment campaign and spoke tobusinesses about the many benefits of volunteering.Our employees in the UK are eligible to receive one paidcommunity/charity day per year and around 150employees took advantage of this day, working on localcommunity projects. This included supporting the LondonCares day in May 2005 where around 40 of our staff wentout to 3 local schools in one day to create wildlife gardensand improve playgrounds in primary schools in 3 Londonboroughs.As a Lloyd’s Community Programme partner, members ofstaff from our London offices give up their lunch hourstwice a week to visit the English Martyr's Roman CatholicSchool, Aldgate to help with IT training and support.In January 2006, a second group of volunteers embarkedon an introduction to the French language with year 6pupils.<strong>JLT</strong> continues to support The Salveson Ski Group withboth funding and a volunteer for the 2006 Easter Skiingtrip to the disabled skiing centre in WinterPark Colorado.<strong>JLT</strong> held several employee social events focused oncharity with 3 quizzes taking place in our London officeseach with a £1,500 prize that the winners could donate totheir chosen charity. The Summer Treasure Hunt raised£7,500 for the charity DebRA.Many of our overseas offices are involved in local charityinitiatives and active fundraising. Several of these havebeen supported by the Group and include a golf dayorganised by our Sydney, Australia office to raisemuch-needed funds for The Cystic Fibrosis Clinic atThe Westmead Children's Hospital.Our <strong>JLT</strong> Asia Managing Director travelled from Singaporeto Siem Reap in Cambodia to run in the 10th Angkor WatInternational Half Marathon to support two internationalcharities by way of donating bicycles to a local school andorphanage, a total of 120 bicycles were donated.In the UK, The Give As You Earn scheme enablesemployees to make regular charitable donations in atax efficient manner.
