Gains and losses arising on derivative financial instruments outstanding as at 31st December 2005 will be released to the incomestatement at various dates up to twenty four months from the balance sheet date. No material amounts were transferred to the income statement during theperiod in respect of the fair value of financial derivatives.a) Forward Foreign Exchange ContractsThe Group’s major currency transaction exposure arises in USD and the Group continues to adopt a prudent approach in actively managing this exposure.As at 31st December 2005 the Group had outstanding forward foreign exchange contracts, principally in USD, amounting to a principal value of£114,043,000 (2004: £113,089,000)b) Interest Rate Swaps and Forward Rate AgreementsThe Group uses interest rate hedges, principally interest rate swaps, to mitigate the impact upon interest earnings and expense of changes in interest ratesThe notional principal amounts of outstanding interest rate swaps and FRAs as at 31st December 2005 was USD 50,000,000 (2004: USD 130,000,000,GBP 50,000,000).Interest rate hedges outstanding at 31st December 2005 have effective USD fixed interest rates, which hedge USD LIBOR at 2.7%. (2004: USD 2% to3.1%, GBP 3.8% to 4.3%). The weighted average period to maturity is 0.3 months. These interest rate swaps are designated and effective as cash flowhedges and the fair value thereof has been deferred in equity.c) Hedge of net investment in foreign entityAs at 31st December 2005 the Group had a US Dollar denominated borrowing totalling USD 28,318,000 (2004: Nil) which was designated as a hedge ofnet investment in the Group’s US subsidiaries. Gains and losses arising from the translation of this foreign currency borrowing to GBP at the balance sheetdate were recognised in ‘Exchange reserves’ in shareholders’ equity.
