<strong>Course</strong> <strong>Selection</strong> <strong>Guidebook</strong> – Fall 2011The only GER for which a student may receive an exemption is GER 6. All exemptions for GER6 must be attempted <strong>and</strong> completed within a student’s first two years in residence at the<strong>College</strong>.The Registrar’s Office will serve as the central coordinating <strong>of</strong>fice for the certification <strong>of</strong> GER 6exemptions. The Office will forward results <strong>of</strong> this survey <strong>and</strong> other appropriate information todepartments to help them plan audition schedules, portfolio reviews, etc. Students should submitmaterials other than their transcript directly to departments as described below. Departments willsend a list <strong>of</strong> the students exempted from the requirement to the Registrar’s Office.ArtA) A portfolio <strong>of</strong> original art works must be submitted during the first two weeks <strong>of</strong> thesemester in either the Fall or Spring semester. Portfolios should be sent or delivered in person tothe Department <strong>of</strong> Art & Art History <strong>and</strong> they must be received by the scheduled deadline. Theportfolio should be identified for “GER 6 Portfolio Review.” A minimum <strong>of</strong> twenty examples <strong>of</strong>original works <strong>of</strong> art must be submitted in the form <strong>of</strong> CD (PC compatible) colored slides orcolored photographs. The actual work should not be submitted. All slides <strong>and</strong> photographs must besubmitted in protective plastic slides or photo sheets, which are available at local photographystores. CD’s, slides <strong>and</strong> photographs must be clearly numbered <strong>and</strong> have a correspondinginformation sheet with the student’s name, medium, size <strong>of</strong> the work (height x width x depth for3D work, length x width for 2D work), date <strong>of</strong> the work, <strong>and</strong> arrow indicating top <strong>of</strong> the slide orphotograph.For 3D portfolios, students should include examples <strong>of</strong> work which demonstrate ability to workwith the following: additive <strong>and</strong> subtractive processes in media such as plaster or clay; assemblagemethods utilizing traditional sculpture materials as well as found objects; <strong>and</strong> techniques <strong>and</strong>materials which explore space <strong>and</strong> volume relationships. For 2D portfolios, students shouldinclude examples <strong>of</strong> work in color, value, line, <strong>and</strong> perspective. The Department will acceptphotography as a creative art for exemption purposes. Art faculty will review each portfolio <strong>and</strong>the results <strong>of</strong> the review will be attached to the portfolio. Exemption from GER 6 DOES NOTequal exemption from ART 211 or ART 212. For students who have been exempted from GER 6,the faculty will recommend placement in the appropriate art course. Students must pick up theirportfolios during the first week <strong>of</strong> classes. The Department is not responsible for portfolios leftafter the deadline.B) A student can exempt from the GER 6 requirement if he/she has successfully completed 2years <strong>of</strong> art. Students should submit an exemption request to the Registrar’s Office(http://www.wm.edu/<strong>of</strong>fices/registrar/documents/degree/Degree_Exemption_Form.<strong>pdf</strong>) by the end<strong>of</strong> the second full week <strong>of</strong> classes. EXHIBITIONS’ PROFESSIONAL STATUS WOULD BENEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO VERFYWITHOUT SEEING THE EXHIBIT.DanceA) The Dance Placement Evaluation will be used to determine GER 6 exemption in Dance. Itwill be administered during Orientation Week in Fall semester to incoming students with previousdance experience. As a result <strong>of</strong> the Placement Evaluation, students will either be placed in a 100or 200 level course, which they can then take to satisfy the GER 6 requirement, or they will beplaced in a 300 or 400 level course having earned the GER 6 exemption.B) There are no exemptions based on documentation <strong>of</strong> previous experience.English (Creative Writing)A) There is no portfolio review or exemption test.14
