<strong>Course</strong> <strong>Selection</strong> <strong>Guidebook</strong> – Fall 2011B) The English Department will evaluate documentation <strong>of</strong> prior experience in 2 years <strong>of</strong>academic courses in creative writing or by a juried publication <strong>of</strong> creative writing (a publicationthat has an editor with pr<strong>of</strong>essional st<strong>and</strong>ing in creative writing—not a vanity publication).Students should submit an exemption request to the Registrar’s Office, on a request form availableon the Registrar’s website, by the end <strong>of</strong> the second full week <strong>of</strong> classes. They should submit theirpublication(s) directly to the English Department by the end <strong>of</strong> the second full week <strong>of</strong> classes.MusicThe Department <strong>of</strong> Music does not grant exemptions for the GER 6 requirement.SpeechA) A student can exempt from the GER 6 requirement in Debate/Forensics if he/she hascompeted in a district national qualifying NFL tournament in two separate years or two CFLnational qualifying tournaments in two separate years. Students should submit to the Departmentevidence <strong>of</strong> competition, such as copies <strong>of</strong> certificates <strong>of</strong> merit, <strong>of</strong>ficial tabulations, or <strong>of</strong>ficialnotification <strong>of</strong> qualification from NFL or CFL authorities.TheatreA) The Department <strong>of</strong> Theatre, Speech, <strong>and</strong> Dance will arrange for a time during FreshmanOrientation for an exemption audition. The Department requires a memorized four to five minuteaudition <strong>of</strong> two contrasting pieces from plays demonstrating a valid interpretation <strong>of</strong> the characterin the context <strong>of</strong> the play, believable characterizations, the ability to evoke appropriate emotionalresponses, <strong>and</strong> control <strong>of</strong> movement, vocal production, <strong>and</strong> the mechanics <strong>of</strong> performance.Students who wish to exempt from the GER 6 requirement using scenic, costume, or lightingdesign may arrange to present portfolios <strong>of</strong> their work to the Department during orientation.Students may also submit copies <strong>of</strong> plays that they have written to the Department. A student maycontact the Department at 757-221-2660 for more information.B) There are no exemptions based on documentation <strong>of</strong> previous experience.Tips for <strong>William</strong> & <strong>Mary</strong> Student AthletesStudents who expect to participate in varsity athletics <strong>and</strong> are unsure <strong>of</strong> their practice times shouldcontact Academic Support Services at (757) 221-3241. While daily practice times are generallyscheduled for a two-hour block between the hours <strong>of</strong> 3:00-6:00 p.m., there may be exceptionsrelevant to your particular sport.III.Majors Having <strong>Course</strong> Requirements Outside Their DepartmentThe following list is designed to call attention to the fact that many disciplines rely on significantbackground information from other disciplines. These outside courses are as important in thedevelopment <strong>of</strong> a major as are courses within the major, <strong>and</strong> should be part <strong>of</strong> academic planningduring your freshman <strong>and</strong> sophomore years at <strong>William</strong> & <strong>Mary</strong>.Africana Studies:Required: 3 credits in research methods, <strong>and</strong> at least one course beyond the 202 level in onelanguage or a 202-level pr<strong>of</strong>iciency in two modern languages that are relevant to the major.American Studies:Required: 6 credits in American History, 9 credits in Humanities <strong>and</strong> 6 credits in Social Sciencedisciplines.
