Military Science Studies Results:<strong>Course</strong> <strong>Selection</strong> <strong>Guidebook</strong> – Fall 20111. A military career overview/opportunity that serves the United States <strong>and</strong> its citizens. Military<strong>of</strong>ficers have seen a jump in prestige since 2001, ranked 5 th in most prestigiouscareers – tied with physicians – by U.S. News <strong>and</strong> World Report (2009). Startingcompensation package exceeds $52K (OSD websitehttp://www.defenselink.mil/militarypay/pay/calc/) with additional incentives <strong>of</strong> 30 dayspaid vacation, federal holidays, paid medical <strong>and</strong> numerous other benefits. Compensationexceeds $83K in four years (2009 dollars).2. Obtain governmental Secret security clearances that enhance employment within thegovernment upon completion <strong>of</strong> collegiate studies.3. Advanced education is a goal for most Army <strong>of</strong>ficers. Many <strong>of</strong>ficers are selected topursue full-time studies toward a masters or doctoral degree through programs paid by theArmy. Multiple programs exist; four <strong>of</strong> the more known programs include:a. Law school, the Fully Funded Legal Education Program (FLEP). The JudgeAdvocate General’s Funded Legal Education Program selects <strong>of</strong>ficers eachyear to attend a regular course <strong>of</strong> instruction leading to a Juris Doctor (J.D.) orBachelor <strong>of</strong> Law (LL.B.) degree at an approved civilian law school. The programsare provided at government expense.b. Training with industry (TWI) program. The TWI program integrates an <strong>of</strong>ficerinto a civilian organization, approximately one year, that provides knowledge,experience <strong>and</strong> perspective in management <strong>and</strong> operational techniques that areconcentrated in the areas <strong>of</strong> artificial intelligence, aviation logistics,communications, electronics, finance, marketing, ordnance, physical security,procurement, public affairs, research <strong>and</strong> development, systems automation <strong>and</strong>transportation.c. Fully funded graduate school that the <strong>of</strong>ficer wishes to attend, usually in the 7 th to10 th year <strong>of</strong> his or her military career, with full pay <strong>and</strong> benefits.d. Medical, clinical psychology, dental <strong>and</strong> other medical programs that can exceed$750K in benefits over the term <strong>of</strong> the medical program from undergraduate toreceiving the medical license.Scholarships:Undergraduate <strong>and</strong> graduate funded contracted student scholarship programs (freshman to senior<strong>and</strong> graduate students). Newly enrolled freshmen through seniors may apply for four, three, two<strong>and</strong> one year scholarships. These scholarships are awarded by the Military Science Department atthe Western Union Building. The contracted scholarships may encompass:1. Paid FULL TUITION AND FEES OR room <strong>and</strong> board (in-state <strong>and</strong> out-<strong>of</strong>-state).*Incentives can exceed $142,000 over a 4-year collegiate program!2. $1,200 a year book payment (bi-annual deposit).3. Cadet annual stipend ($3,000-$5,000, non-taxable)4. Foreign language studies monthly incentives ($100-$250 per month)5. Scholarship students/cadets must be contracted (a first-year freshman student maydecline the ROTC program prior to his or her sophomore with no obligation).6. Simultaneous Membership Program with the United States Army Reserve orNational Guard which provides additional monies to the student.7. Other loan repayment incentives upon entry into active duty (up to $60,000,60
