Contact program fordetails.IV.Advanced Placement InformationCredit received through the Advanced Placement (AP) exam may be applied toward degreerequirements, including pr<strong>of</strong>iciencies, GERs, major <strong>and</strong> minor requirements. (Exemptions, 0 creditplacement, do not fulfill the GERs because they do not award credit.)In most departments, advanced placement credits are routinely awarded based on the AP exam testscore. In some cases, the AP examinations are reviewed by the faculty in the appropriatedepartment at <strong>William</strong> & <strong>Mary</strong> to determine whether advanced placement <strong>and</strong>/or academic creditis warranted, using the content <strong>of</strong> the <strong>College</strong>’s introductory course as a guide. Please note:students may not take a course at <strong>William</strong> & <strong>Mary</strong> for which they have received AP credit.<strong>Course</strong>s for which AP exemption has been granted may be taken for credit. If you register for anyclasses before receipt <strong>of</strong> your AP scores, assume that you did well <strong>and</strong> will receive at least anexemption, if not credit. On the other h<strong>and</strong>, if you are fairly certain that you will not receive anexemption or credit, plan accordingly.For general information on AP examination exemptions <strong>and</strong> credit, please contact the Office<strong>of</strong> the University Registrar at (757) 221-2823. Otherwise, please contact the appropriatedepartment directly.American Studies:The program will recognize Advanced Placement credit awarded for appropriate courses inHistory, English <strong>and</strong> Government. Contact Undergraduate Director for more information.Art & Art History:A score <strong>of</strong> 5 for Art History is awarded 6 credits for Art History 251 <strong>and</strong> Art History 252. A score<strong>of</strong> 5 for Art Studio (Drawing) will be evaluated by the Art <strong>and</strong> Art History Department todetermine possible credit for Art 211 or 212. A score <strong>of</strong> 5 for Art Studio: Art 2-D Design or ArtStudio: 3-D Design will be evaluated by the Art <strong>and</strong> Art History Department to determine possiblecredit for Art 211 or 212.Biology:A score <strong>of</strong> 5 is awarded 3 credits for Biology 100, 1 credit for Biology 102, <strong>and</strong> exemptions forBiology 220 (221 lab) <strong>and</strong> 225 (226 lab). If, however, the student chooses to enroll in Biology220/221, 225/226, the 4 AP credits will be awarded as elective credit that will not be applicabletoward the minimum requirements for a major or minor in Biology. Students are stronglyencouraged to enroll in both Biology 220/221 <strong>and</strong> 225/226.Chemistry:A score <strong>of</strong> 5 on the Chemistry examination is awarded 8 credits for Chemistry 103-103L <strong>and</strong>3xx-354. A score <strong>of</strong> 4 will be given 4 credits for Chemistry 103-103L. Incoming freshmen withthese scores <strong>and</strong> an interest in chemistry as a major are strongly encouraged to enroll in Chemistry335 (Fall).Computer Science:18
