Precalculus Mathematics. Fall (3) A study <strong>of</strong> the real number system, sets, functions, graphs,equations <strong>and</strong> systems <strong>of</strong> equations, followed by a study <strong>of</strong> the trigonometric functions <strong>and</strong> theirproperties. This course is designed only for students intending to take Mathematics 108 or 111,<strong>and</strong> whose background is deficient in algebra <strong>and</strong> trigonometry. This course may not be appliedtowards a major in mathematics nor does it satisfy the GER 1 requirement. A student may notreceive credit for this course after successfully completing a mathematics course numbered above106. Students whose SAT mathematics score is less than or equal to 590 should strongly considertaking Math 103 before attempting any calculus course.104. Mathematics <strong>of</strong> Powered Flight. (GER 1) Fall <strong>and</strong> Spring (3) This course will illustrate theuse <strong>of</strong> elementary mathematics as a crucial tool in underst<strong>and</strong>ing the external world. Problemsdealing with wind, runway layout, maps, navigation, tires, luggage, air pressure, <strong>and</strong> other items <strong>of</strong>interest will consistently invoke real data. Students will employ a variety <strong>of</strong> computing aids: aflight simulator, an FAA wind analysis program <strong>and</strong> an NOAA routing analysis program as well asthe symbolic language MAPLE. Neither physics nor mathematics beyond high school algebra isrequired. Not open to students who have successfully completed a mathematics course numberedabove 104 (except 150).106. Elementary Probability <strong>and</strong> Statistics. (GER 1) Fall <strong>and</strong> Spring (3) Introduction to basicconcepts <strong>and</strong> procedures <strong>of</strong> probability <strong>and</strong> statistics including descriptive statistics, probability,classical distributions, estimation, hypothesis testing, correlation, <strong>and</strong> regression, in the context <strong>of</strong>practical applications to data analysis from other disciplines. Not open to students who havesuccessfully completed a mathematics course numbered above 210. Students who receive a score<strong>of</strong> 4 or 5 on the AP Statistics examination may not enroll in Math 106.108. Brief Calculus with Applications. (GER 1) Fall <strong>and</strong> Spring (4). An introduction to thecalculus <strong>of</strong> rational, exponential, <strong>and</strong> logarithmic functions, including some multivariable calculus,with applications to business, social <strong>and</strong> life sciences. Algebra pr<strong>of</strong>iciency required. Students mayreceive credit for only one <strong>of</strong> Mathematics 108, 111, or 131, <strong>and</strong> may not receive credit forMathematics 108 after receiving credit for any mathematics course numbered higher than 108,with the exception <strong>of</strong> Mathematics 150. To use Mathematics 108 as a prerequisite for Mathematics112, students need approval <strong>of</strong> the department chair. Students with SAT mathematics scores <strong>of</strong> 590or below should take Math 103 before Math 108.57
