Students will be unable to register for a Freshman Seminarswithout a “W” if they have not already earned AP/IB credit or exemption for Writing 101.Pr<strong>of</strong>iciencies1. Foreign Language. Students are required to demonstrate pr<strong>of</strong>iciency in a foreign languagecommensurate with the 202 level at <strong>William</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Mary</strong>. Completion <strong>of</strong> the foreign languagerequirement is accomplished in several ways:a) completion <strong>of</strong> Level IV in High School <strong>of</strong> an ancient or modern foreign language;b) a score <strong>of</strong> at least 600 on the <strong>College</strong> Board SAT II achievement test in a modern foreignlanguage or 650 on the test in Latin;c) completion <strong>of</strong> a college language course at or above the 202 leveld) AP or IB credit for the 202 or higher level in any foreign languageStudents seeking to demonstrate pr<strong>of</strong>iciency in a modern foreign language not currently <strong>of</strong>fered at<strong>William</strong> & <strong>Mary</strong> may do so by documenting one <strong>of</strong> the following:1) this was the language <strong>of</strong> instruction in the high school from which you graduated2) that you have scored “Intermediate” or higher on the ACTFL st<strong>and</strong>ardized test for this languageIf you meet one <strong>of</strong> these criteria, you may petition the Registrar for alternate fulfillment <strong>of</strong> theforeign language pr<strong>of</strong>iciency requirement by using this form:http://www.wm.edu/<strong>of</strong>fices/registrar/documents/degree/Pr<strong>of</strong>iciency_Exemption_Form.<strong>pdf</strong>.N.B. Among the ancient languages in which students may demonstrate pr<strong>of</strong>iciency at <strong>William</strong> <strong>and</strong><strong>Mary</strong> are Latin, Greek <strong>and</strong> Hebrew. Students may petition to the Chair <strong>of</strong> Classical Studies todemonstrate pr<strong>of</strong>iciency in other ancient languages.PlacementA. Placement in modern languages is determined by prior study <strong>of</strong> the language in high school.1. If you have completed Level I, enroll in *101 or **102.2. If you have completed Level II, enroll in 201.3. If you have completed Level III, enroll in either 201 or 202.4. If you have completed Level IV, enrollment above 202 is required5. If you have completed Level V, enroll in courses above 202 (e.g., French 151, 210 or 212;German 205 or 208; Hispanic Studies 151 or 207, etc.).*All 101 courses in Modern Languages are <strong>of</strong>fered only in fall semester.**All 102 courses in Modern Languages are <strong>of</strong>fered only in spring semester.The following additional placement rules apply to Arabic, Chinese, Italian, Japanese or Russian:Incoming students who wish to continue in Arabic, Chinese, Italian, Japanese or Russian at the<strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>William</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Mary</strong> will be placed into the appropriate level according to the results <strong>of</strong> aplacement exam given before the start <strong>of</strong> classes each semester.
