<strong>Course</strong> <strong>Selection</strong> <strong>Guidebook</strong> – Fall 2011flooding <strong>and</strong> water pollution, coastal processes, <strong>and</strong> natural hazard mitigation. Prerequisite:Geology 101 or 110 or 150.Global StudiesThe curriculum <strong>of</strong> the Faculty <strong>of</strong> Arts <strong>and</strong> Sciences provides for interdisciplinary majors in GlobalStudies (GBST), which include concentrations in Asian <strong>and</strong> Middle Eastern Studies, EuropeanStudies, Latin American Studies, <strong>and</strong> Russian <strong>and</strong> Post-Soviet Studies. Through coursework onthe culture, history, languages, literature, politics, <strong>and</strong> religions <strong>of</strong> major world regions, studentsexplore the specificity <strong>of</strong> a given region, the ways in which global forces are realized in <strong>and</strong>through local contexts, <strong>and</strong> the interconnections between global regions. Global Studies is distinctfrom International Relations (INRL), which focuses on the study <strong>of</strong> economic, historical, <strong>and</strong>political relations among nation-states as well as the interactions between states, markets, <strong>and</strong> nonstateactors (such as international organizations, non-governmental organizations, <strong>and</strong> multinationalcorporations).In general, a major in Global Studies includes courses from at least three departments. Detaileddescriptions <strong>of</strong> the major programs are available in the Undergraduate Catalog, <strong>and</strong> students maycontact Global Studies faculty advisors for additional information.Majors in Global Studies include a modern foreign language component that exceeds the <strong>College</strong>’spr<strong>of</strong>iciency requirement. In most cases, pr<strong>of</strong>iciency at the third-year level is intrinsic to the majorcourse work.Students are strongly encouraged to seek opportunities for study abroad which complement theirGlobal Studies major. With prior approval, most courses taken abroad may be applied to major orother requirements.Introductory <strong>Course</strong>s for Global Studies ProgramsAfrican StudiesNew Students: Please see the section on Africana StudiesAsian <strong>and</strong> Middle Eastern StudiesAsian <strong>and</strong> Middle Eastern Studies (AMES) is a multidisciplinary program that aims to enrich theunderst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>of</strong> a broadly conceived “Asia” in relation to other parts <strong>of</strong> the world. Representingthe languages <strong>and</strong> cultures practiced by over half <strong>of</strong> the world’s population the AMES programincludes the study <strong>of</strong> history, politics, religion, literature, fine <strong>and</strong> media arts, expressive <strong>and</strong> ritualculture, <strong>and</strong> the major languages <strong>of</strong> the region. Its curriculum consists <strong>of</strong> concentrations in EastAsian Studies <strong>and</strong> Middle Eastern Studies as well as four minor programs <strong>of</strong> study includingminors in East Asian Studies, Middle Eastern Studies, South Asian Studies <strong>and</strong> Comparative <strong>and</strong>Diaspora Studies.
