Special Programs InformationWilliam and Mary has “combined plans” with the engineering schools of Columbia University andRensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Under the “3:2 plan”, a student spends three years at Williamand Mary and two years at the engineering school and receives a bachelor’s degree from Williamand Mary in their primary major as well as a bachelor’s degree in engineering from the affiliatedschool. The degree from William and Mary is awarded after one full year in the engineeringprogram upon successful completion of the degree requirements of the College. Students areguaranteed admission to these engineering programs if the prerequisites are met. For allengineering programs, the following courses must be completed by the end of the junior year:*Mathematics 111, 112, 212 or 213*Physics 101, 102*Chemistry 103*Chemistry or Physics introductory lab*Computer Science 141*Economics 101 or 102*Writing 101*All GER coursesSpecific engineering programs typically have several additional required courses. Though astudent can in principle choose any desired major while at William and Mary, most of the courseslisted above are also required for math and science majors at the College. Note that in somedepartments at William and Mary, the requirement for a senior research or honors project, supervised by William and Mary faculty, may make a 3:2 combined program difficult. In suchcases, a 4:2 combined program with identical admission requirements is available.Normally, a B average is required for the student to be accepted by the engineering institution intoits 3:2 program. For more information on curriculum planning, please consult Professor Todd Averett(tdaver@wm.edu) in the Physics Department.Information is also available at the following website:Columbiahttp://www.studentaffairs.columbia.edu/admissions/engineering/combined85
