<strong>Course</strong> <strong>Selection</strong> <strong>Guidebook</strong> – Fall 2011Beginning-Level language courses unless space remains in these classes once underclass studentshave registered.N.B. Credit will not be given for modern language courses that, using the formula <strong>of</strong> one highschool year equals one college semester, repeat the level <strong>of</strong> courses taken in high school. Incomingfreshmen <strong>and</strong> transfer students with 4 or more years <strong>of</strong> high school study in one language or theequivalent <strong>of</strong> 202 at the transfer institution will be considered to have completed the languagerequirement <strong>and</strong> must enroll in appropriate courses above the 202 level. Students who havecompleted Level III in a modern foreign language in high school may not receive credit for 101-102in college, <strong>and</strong> students who have completed Level IV in a modern foreign language in high schoolmay not receive credit for 201-202 in college. Exceptions may only be made with the prior writtenapproval <strong>of</strong> the language section coordinator <strong>and</strong> the chair or associate chair <strong>of</strong> Modern Languages.Questions about placement should be addressed to the appropriate language section coordinator.B. If you are concerned that your circumstances warrant a different placement, please contact thecoordinator or the appropriate language section. There is no exam <strong>of</strong>fered for placement purposesexcept in Arabic, Chinese, Italian, Japanese, Latin <strong>and</strong> Russian. (see below for Latin)C. Please refer to Section IV for information regarding how Advanced Placement examinations canexempt a student from the foreign language pr<strong>of</strong>iciency requirement.D. Students who seed to declare a major in their native language or continue in their native languageshould contact the appropriate language section coordinator for placement assistance.Classical Languages (Greek, Hebrew, <strong>and</strong> Latin):Greek <strong>and</strong> HebrewStudents who wish to take a placement examination in Classical Greek or Biblical Hebrew shouldcontact the Department <strong>of</strong> Classical Studies to make individual arrangements for testing.LatinA student who wishes to continue in Latin at the college <strong>of</strong> <strong>William</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Mary</strong> will be placed into theappropriate level according to one <strong>of</strong> the following st<strong>and</strong>ardized examinations: SAT II Subject test in LatinAP-VergilAP-Latin Literature (Catullus-Horace; Catullus-Ovid; or Catullus-Cicero (only one AP-Latin Literature exam can count for credit at <strong>William</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Mary</strong>)The Department <strong>of</strong> Classical Studies does not allow self-placement under any circumstances.Students must take one <strong>of</strong> the exams specified above to be placed into a Latin course.Placement by Score on our Latin Placement Test or the SAT II Achievement Test in Latin 650 or above: 300 level Latin or above 450-640: Latin 201 below 450: Latin 101Placement by Latin AP Exam6
