<strong>Course</strong> <strong>Selection</strong> <strong>Guidebook</strong> – Fall 2011General Education Requirements (GERs)The General Education Requirements (GERs) consist <strong>of</strong> coursework across seven differentknowledge areas <strong>of</strong> the arts <strong>and</strong> sciences curriculum. These requirements, complemented by thepr<strong>of</strong>iciency <strong>and</strong> major requirements, encourage you to study a variety <strong>of</strong> disciplines <strong>and</strong> form theheart <strong>of</strong> a liberal arts education at <strong>William</strong> & <strong>Mary</strong>.While you should be sensitive to these requirements, don’t be overwhelmed by them now. You willhave plenty <strong>of</strong> time <strong>and</strong> several required meetings with your academic advisor in which to come to afull underst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>of</strong> these requirements.Only courses approved for GER credit may be used to fulfill these requirements as indicated in theCatalog <strong>and</strong> Registration Schedule. (Lists <strong>of</strong> approved courses may also be found in the Office <strong>of</strong>Academic Advising, the Dean <strong>of</strong> Undergraduate Studies Office <strong>and</strong> on <strong>William</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Mary</strong>’s on-lineinformation system.) These requirements (except GER 6) must be met with three or four creditcourses. A single course may fulfill, at most, two GERs (if so approved) <strong>and</strong> may also be used t<strong>of</strong>ulfill major, minor, <strong>and</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>iciency requirements. These courses may not be taken pass/fail.GER 1: Mathematics <strong>and</strong> Quantitative Reasoning: one courseGER 2: Natural Sciences: two coursesA. One course in Physical SciencesB. One course in Biological SciencesOne Laboratory associated with one <strong>of</strong> the courses aboveGER 3: Social Sciences: two coursesGER 4: World Cultures <strong>and</strong> History: three coursesA. History <strong>and</strong> Culture in the European TraditionB. History <strong>and</strong> Culture outside the European TraditionC. A course in Cross-Cultural Issues, or a second A or a second BGER 5: Literature <strong>and</strong> History <strong>of</strong> Arts: one courseGER 6: Creative <strong>and</strong> Performing Arts: two credits in a creative/performing art.
