By taking courses <strong>of</strong>fered by many different departments, students can deepen theirunderst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>of</strong> the Middle Ages <strong>and</strong> Renaissance while learning to think <strong>and</strong> to work in aninterdisciplinary way.For a complete list <strong>of</strong> the program’s requirements for majors <strong>and</strong> minors, please consult the coursecatalog or the program’s web page: http://www.wm.edu/as/medren/index.php.Introductory courses: students with an interest in “Med-Ren” are encouraged to take freshmanseminars that cover medieval or Renaissance topics – these seminars can be applied toward themajor or minor. Such students are also encouraged to take introductory 100- <strong>and</strong> 200-level courses<strong>of</strong>fered by those departments (Art History, Classical Studies, English, History, Modern Languages,Music, Philosophy <strong>and</strong> Religious Studies) that contribute to the program (for example, English203, British Literature I, or Religious Studies 210, Introduction to the History <strong>of</strong> Christianity).Students who have placed into 300-level language courses are encouraged to take those that covermedieval <strong>and</strong> Renaissance subjects (such as German 301, German Literature from the Beginningto the Seventeenth Century).For more information, please contact Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Suzanne Hagedorn, Director <strong>of</strong> the Program inMedieval <strong>and</strong> Renaissance Studies, English Department, 757-221-3923.Military ScienceArmy Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) is proud <strong>of</strong> its affiliation with the <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong><strong>William</strong> & <strong>Mary</strong>. The Military Science Department’s program <strong>and</strong> our credited courses provide aparallel path for the students to study while obtaining an academic degree. The studies arerigorous <strong>and</strong>, once completed, the student who attends ROTC will receive commission in theUnited States Army (Active Duty, Reserve, <strong>and</strong>/or National Guard up to an 8 year serviceobligation). The ROTC program <strong>of</strong>fers 1 to 4 year UNDERGRADUATE AND GRADUATEscholarships in support <strong>of</strong> obtaining Bachelors, Masters or a second degree from the <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong><strong>William</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Mary</strong>. The benefits, listed below, provide a way for students to limit the financialhardships associated with obtaining a degree. While there are many programs/avenues to acquirefunds, our program is unique because the ROTC instructors provide 4 years <strong>of</strong> leadership training,a future career <strong>and</strong> a way to leave the college or university with the debt many students acquire atthe end <strong>of</strong> their collegiate studies. The <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>William</strong> & <strong>Mary</strong> Army ROTC program can<strong>of</strong>fer to qualified students who pass the medical <strong>and</strong> physical fitness tests <strong>and</strong> have a minimumGPA <strong>of</strong> 2.5 the current benefits.What Military Science Offers:1. Extensive leadership <strong>and</strong> management courses, which are applicable both to civilianindustry <strong>and</strong> military service.2. Opportunities to participate in leadership <strong>and</strong> confidence-building activities such asl<strong>and</strong> navigation, adventure training, marksmanship, field training exercises <strong>and</strong> physicaltraining.3. Future undergraduate, graduate, <strong>and</strong> doctoral level studies requiring funding in medicine,psychology (clinical), nursing, law, dental, business, education <strong>and</strong> other undergraduate/graduate educational fields.4. Opportunity to study abroad in support <strong>of</strong> curriculum major.5. Ability to compete <strong>and</strong> earn prized Army schools that include Air Assault <strong>and</strong> Airbornetraining as a contracted Cadet.59
