<strong>Course</strong> <strong>Selection</strong> <strong>Guidebook</strong> – Fall 2011191: Freshman Honors Research - Fall (1) Introduction to chemical research with an assignedfaculty mentor. Enrollment is competitive <strong>and</strong> restricted to freshman students concurrentlyenrolled in CHEM 335. Applications are made at the beginning <strong>of</strong> the fall term.335: Principles <strong>of</strong> Inorganic Chemistry - Fall (3) A systematic study <strong>of</strong> the properties <strong>and</strong>reactions <strong>of</strong> chemical elements <strong>and</strong> their compounds. Enrollment is restricted to freshmen whoreceive <strong>William</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Mary</strong> credit for CHEM 103 with a score <strong>of</strong> 4 or 5 on the Advanced PlacementExamination in Chemistry, or a score <strong>of</strong> 5 to 7 on the higher level IB exam, or received credit forCHEM 103 by examination or transfer credit.Introductory <strong>Course</strong>s <strong>of</strong>fered only in the Spring semester206: Organic Chemistry I - Spring (3) A mechanistic approach to the study <strong>of</strong> the chemistry <strong>of</strong>carbon compounds. Particular emphasis is placed on the relationship between structure <strong>and</strong>reactivity in organic reactions. Intended for science majors. It is required for biology <strong>and</strong> chemistrymajors. CHEM 206L is the companion laboratory course. Completion <strong>of</strong> CHEM103 (by eitherenrolling or receiving Advanced Placement credit) is a prerequisite.206L: Chemistry Laboratory II (Organic) - Spring (1) Laboratory techniques in organic chemistry.Each week there is a short discussion period followed immediately by a laboratory (total is 4hours). Students enrolled in this course should be concurrently enrolled in CHEM 206.Classical StudiesThe Department <strong>of</strong> Classical Studies <strong>of</strong>fers courses in Latin, Classical <strong>and</strong> New Testament Greek,<strong>and</strong> Hebrew as well as a variety <strong>of</strong> courses on classical civilization which require no languagestudy. The <strong>College</strong>’s foreign language requirement can be fulfilled by four years <strong>of</strong> high schoolLatin, by an SAT II Achievement Test in Latin score <strong>of</strong> 650, or a Latin AP exam score <strong>of</strong> 5, or bycompleting either Latin 202, Greek 202, or Hebrew 202 with a passing grade. Students who wishto take a placement examination in Classical Greek or Biblical Hebrew should contact theDepartment <strong>of</strong> Classical Studies to make individual arrangements for testing.A student who wishes to continue in Latin at the <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>William</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Mary</strong> will be placedinto the appropriate level according to one <strong>of</strong> the following st<strong>and</strong>ardized examinations: SAT II Subject test in Latin AP – Latin Or the Classical Studies placement examination which is normally <strong>of</strong>fered at the beginning<strong>of</strong> the fall semester. The exam will be <strong>of</strong>fered in the spring term only to qualified studentswho have a reasonable expectation <strong>of</strong> placing into upper level Latin by virtue <strong>of</strong> priorsuccessful completion <strong>of</strong> advanced Latin courses elsewhere.The Department <strong>of</strong> Classical Studies does not allow self-placement under any circumstances.Students must submit a test score as specified above to be placed in a Latin course.*FOR ADDITIONAL PLACEMENT RULES IN LATIN, GREEK AND HEBREW, SEEPAGES 6-7.In regard to Advanced Placement Tests, see Advanced Placement Information.34
