EditorialOver many years, in my discussions with colleagues, professors, teachers, school principalsand policy makers, a question would invariably be put to me: Why don’t you try publishingan education journal? When I tried to change the subject, they would insist and remindme of a previous experience from years ago, about 12 to 15 years back, when I publishedMprehtësi (Sharpness of mind), an education journal that was the by-product of theReading and Writing for Critical Thinking project. The journal was welcomed by universityprofessors at teacher education faculties, policy makers and school teachers alike. The articlespublished were of very good quality, treating a wide variety of interesting topics, and thepublication quality was excellent, close to international standards. Ten issues of the journalwere published and then the publication ceased. The reasons for this were multiple, but asanyone would probably guess, the main reason was the drying up of our financial resources. In the course of the years, The Center for Democratic Education has built up a richexperience in quality publications and we are the only one in the region to have a complete setof publications aimed at professional development in the field of education, extensively used byteachers, students, principals, policy makers and university teachers. With our forty publishedtitles and counting (many new titles are in the pipeline or in our plans) we have legitimatereason to be proud. Our education system, as any other education system elsewhere in theworld, has a need for such publications and we are doing our bit to meet that need. All this work has prepared the ground for finally providing a positive response to mycolleagues and collaborators in relation to a much needed education journal. The time hasfinally come and, following over six months of hard work and dedication, we now are ableto present the first issue of the Albanian Journal of Educational Studies. The Journal aims to address a wide variety of educational issues concerning pre- andin-service teacher training for Albanian teachers, in the European and global context. Oureducation system is going through rapid transformations due to the democratization of thewhole society, European integration processes and fast changes in technology. It is our hopethat this Journal will serve as a forum for all researchers, policy makers and practitionersin Albania and elsewhere. As editor-in-chief, I would like to thank all my colleagues whomI approached to become members of either the Albanian or the International Board andwho accepted the invitation and promised to make their contribution to the AJES. This isa guarantee of our future success and, needless to say, greatly appreciated. The six articles appearing in this issue have been written by eight authors, from Albania,Kosovo, Macedonia and Germany. The first article, Grammar in Teaching Albanian as aForeign Language - Concepts, Presentations, Analysis, is authored by Emine TEICHMANN,Bundessprachenamt, Selten gelehrte Sprachen (Albanisch), Hürth, Germany & visiting fellowAlbanian Journal of Educational Studies 4
