Awards Day is held each spring for the purpose of recognizing outstanding academic achievement and service to the<strong>College</strong>. Other awards are presented at the Athletic Banquet and at Commencement. For criteria of awards anddistinctions, please refer to the <strong>College</strong> Catalog.Clubs and Organizations3.3The <strong>College</strong> recognizes a wide variety of clubs and organizations and encourages student participation. Thepurposes of these organizations are: (1) to broaden education, (2) to encourage fellowship, (3) to provide leadershipopportunities, (4) to provide opportunities for fulfillment of special interests. Campus organizations must contributeto the academic, recreational, religious, or cultural climate of the <strong>College</strong> in order to warrant existence andrecognition. For this reason, the <strong>College</strong> reserves the right to register and evaluate all student organizations andrequire them to function in accordance with their approved constitutions. The <strong>College</strong> further reserves the right todissolve any student organization that it feels is detrimental to the welfare of the students or the <strong>College</strong> in general.Procedures for Recognizing New Organizations 3.3.1Any group or individual wishing to form a new organization should consult with the <strong>Student</strong> Development Officefor advice and assistance. An application for recognition must be presented to the <strong>Student</strong> Government Association.The application must consist of a proposed constitution giving a full statement of purpose, governing regulations,and the intended adviser (who must be an employee of <strong>Mount</strong> <strong>Olive</strong> <strong>College</strong>). The <strong>Student</strong> Government Associationwill recommend approval to the Vice President for <strong>Student</strong> Development for approval. Granting of officialrecognition to student groups is at the discretion of the <strong>College</strong>, the Executive Council and the President, on behalfof the Board of Trustees.Active student organizations must have an updated constitution and current list of officers and adviser on file in the<strong>Student</strong> Activities Office no later than October 15 of each new academic year.Clubs and organizations must submit a monthly report to SGA that highlights the names of active members, serviceprojects and fund raisers. Failure to submit reports may result in the loss of official recognition.Advisers for Clubs and Organizations 3.3.2For approval and for continued recognition, each club or organization must have a faculty or staff member to giveguidance and counsel as an adviser.Fund Raising 3.3.3Any recognized student organization wishing to conduct a fundraiser must gain approval in advance from the Officeof <strong>Student</strong> Development.<strong>Student</strong> Organization Conduct 3.3.4<strong>Student</strong> organizations are expected to conform to the <strong>College</strong>’s rules and regulations, and a commitment to suchshould be included in the group’s constitution. <strong>Student</strong> organizations which are found to be in violation of <strong>College</strong>rules and regulations and/or city, state, or federal law shall be subject to sanctions imposed by the Vice President for<strong>Student</strong> Development (or his/her designee), up to and including termination of recognition by the <strong>College</strong>. Separateand/or additional disciplinary action may be taken with an individual(s) within the organization.Active Clubs and Organizations 3.3.5Alpha Chi – The Upsilon Chapter of Alpha Chi is a national interdisciplinary honor society for the purpose ofencouraging scholarship. Membership is selected from the top ten percent of juniors and seniors who have beenenrolled full-time for the academic year prior to election and who have completed at least one half of the hoursrequired for graduation.Alpha Phi Sigma – The Delta Kappa Chapter of Alpha Phi Sigma is the National Criminal Justice Honor Society.Its purpose is to recognize and promote high scholarship among students actively engaged in collegiate preparation21
