It is also the policy of the <strong>College</strong> that accusations of sexual harassment which are made without good cause shallnot be condoned. If a person knowingly files a false statement or tries to use the complaint system in retaliationagainst an individual, he or she is subject to sanctions up to and including termination or expulsion. However, acomplaint that is “not substantiated” does not automatically fall into the “false statement” category.This policy applies to all <strong>College</strong> students, faculty, administrators, staff members and employees as well as vendorsand guests at all <strong>College</strong> locations. This includes those members of the <strong>College</strong> Community who are involved inoff-campus programs such as internships and cooperative programs. This policy applies to the workplace,recruitment, appointment, and advancement of employees. It also applies to student contact in and out of theclassroom and the evaluation of students’ academic performance.The <strong>College</strong> recognizes that prevention is the best tool for the elimination of sexual harassment. It is the policy ofthe <strong>College</strong> to conduct periodic training on this policy, reporting procedures for all employees and students, trainingfor investigations and disciplinary actions for all managerial and supervisory personnel, and educational seminarsfor students.Human Relations Committee:The Human Relations Committee members are appointed by the President of the <strong>College</strong> and consists of a total offour members. The Committee is responsible for hearing and investigating of allegations of sexual harassment. Thecommittee will report all findings to the President of the <strong>College</strong>.Complaints and Resolution:A. The Informal Process: This process is designed to achieve resolution of the alleged incident informally.The informal process is intended to be flexible in order to reach an acceptable solution. While a writtenstatement from the complainant is helpful, it is not required to initiate or pursue the informal process. Anymember of the Human Relations Committee may assist a student in pursuing the Informal Process. Forcontacts for reporting an incident, see the following paragraph. The person contacted will discuss thealleged incident with the pertinent parties to include the Human Relations Committee, in an attempt toresolve the situation. Documentation is to be completed by any <strong>College</strong> employee receiving a complaint.This documentation will be reviewed and maintained by the Human Relations Committee.B. The Formal Process: For a complaint against another student, the policy and guidelines outlined in the<strong>Student</strong> Code of Conduct are to be utilized. Please see the Vice President for <strong>Student</strong> Development forfurther details or an explanation. For a complaint against a faculty member, administrator, staff member,employee, or vendor of the <strong>College</strong>, a written complaint and written response is required. To report anincident, see the following paragraph.Confidentiality:Confidentiality cannot be guaranteed. However, the <strong>College</strong> will make all reasonable efforts to maintain theconfidentiality of all parties involved in a sexual harassment investigation.Contacts:A student may report an incident of sexual harassment to his/her program director, department chair, or immediatesupervisor and is encouraged to use the normal supervisory chain, if possible. If an individual does not feelcomfortable using the normal supervisory chain, individuals may provide their complaint to the Human RelationsCommittee: Dr. Ellen Jordan, Vice President for Academic Affairs (Henderson Building, 919-658-2502, ext. 1001),Dr. Barbara Kornegay, Vice President for Enrollment (Poole Administration Building, 919-658-2502, ext. 1200), Dr.Karen E. Bass, Vice President for <strong>Student</strong> Development (Lois K. Murphy Regional Center, 919-658-2502, ext.1480).Personal Responsibility:Through educational workshops and informational printed materials, the <strong>College</strong> seeks to make all students aware ofwhat they can and should do about sexual harassment.
