SUSTAINABLE ENERGY REGULATION AND POLICYMAKING TRAINING MANUALpage 9.96Currently, there are a number of private companies offering renewable energytechnologies and services in Ghana. Most of them are involved in solar electricity, and mainly sell to private urban households. The companies sell discretecomponents such as panels and balance of system (BOS) parts: batteries, inverters, chargers, solar lanterns, and submersible pumps. However, some companiesoffer full system design, installation and maintenance. A few companies offerinstallation and maintenance services only.Recently, some opportunities were created for the private sector to supply largequantities of solar PV equipment. For example, in 2005, the Ministry of Educationrequired 300 solar home systems for its Non-formal Education Division (NFED).The supply and installation of the pre-designed PV systems was put to a competitivetender.Several projects have deployed solar PV systems to provide electricity servicesto off-grid communities. Notable projects are the Renewable Energy ServicesProject (RESPRO) in the East Mamprusi district. This project started in February1999 and was originally expected to last three years after which RESPRO wouldbecome a public sector company providing rural energy services for a fee.Although the project phase formally ended on 31 March 2003, the Ministry hascontinued to support the programme.RESPRO has installed and is operating solar PV systems in over one hundredcommunities in thirteen districts of the three Northern regions and Brong-Ahaforegion. More than 1,500 systemswere installed in several communities in the Volta, Eastern, Upper West,Greater Accra and Northern Regions. Some of these communities have since beenconnected to the national grid, and the Ministry intends to relocate those PV systemsto other districts where they are needed.13Ministry of Energy: www.energymin.gov.gh
