City of Guelph2008 Annual ReportClosed Eastview Road Landfill Siteflow across the wall. This prevents any leachate flow out of the landfill site to the shallow groundwatersystem. This is best demonstrated along the southwest leg of the south collector. Along this portionleachate levels measured in the system were, on average throughout most of the year, around 340.1 mASL,whereas outside the system the groundwater levels were on average 342.1 mASL.Figure 13 illustrates the bedrock groundwater flows in June 2008 below the landfill. These groundwaterflows are generally similar to previous years 6 . A total of three new locations were completed in September2007, near locations 37/50. These locations are intended to aid in the refinement of the shallow bedrockgroundwater flow in this area (near the former entrance to the landfill). As they were only completed inSeptember 2007, there is still insufficient data collected to date (just over one year). These locations arenow included as part of the more detailed monthly water level program. The addition of these locations onthe groundwater flow map continues to show that groundwater flow in the shallow bedrock is towards thelandfill from this area and that 37-I is still interpreted as being upgradient.In conclusion, the current interpretation of groundwater flow directions around the site have remained similarto previous years.In order to assess downward groundwater flow through the till, several locations were selected to show verticalgroundwater elevation trends with depth (Appendix A). The selected locations were chosen to illustrate therelationship of groundwater elevations in the outwash/upper till, lower till and bedrock. These figures also illustratethe seasonal groundwater elevation fluctuations across the site. These figures show that in most casesdownward gradients are observed across the till below the site.Of importance are the gradients below the landfill footprint. Looking at the gradients between the waterlevels measured in the outwash beneath the waste only and the interpreted bedrock groundwater surface, in2008, the estimated vertical gradients beneath the landfill ranged from 0.00 to 0.18 m/m or on average about0.10 m/m. The downward movement of groundwater, below the landfill, is estimated to be only 0 to 4.1 cmper year or on average 2 cm per year. These gradients and downward flow velocities are found to be slightlylower than those observed in previous years, excepting 2006, and similar to last year.To put these actual flow velocities into perspective, on average it would take over 1,000 years for theleachate to move through the till into the underlying bedrock, based on the 2008 water levels.In conclusion, vertical gradients towards the bedrock are on average very low. The estimated downwardflow velocity is also very slow, in the order of only a few centimetres per year.4.3 Leachate QualitySection 3.1 examined the quality of the leachate in the PLCCS, as it related to sewer discharge. In thissection, the leachate quality measured in groundwater monitors in the waste, and in the outwash beneath thewaste, is presented.
