City of Guelph2008 Annual ReportClosed Eastview Road Landfill SiteVinyl ChlorideIn addition to the other quality assurance measures outlined, there was a special tube-spiking program usedwith the sample tubes. Each of the sample tubes was spiked in the laboratory with a deuterated vinylchloride surrogate. This surrogate is chemically identical to regular vinyl chloride but can be speciated fromnaturally occurring vinyl chloride because of a small difference in molecular weight. The amount ofdeuterated vinyl chloride recovered was an indicator of the stability of vinyl chloride on the sample tubes. The results of the surrogate-spiking program are summarized in Table 17. The spiking values averaged 59%recovery during the sampling program. The amount of DVC surrogate recovered from each sample wasbetween 30-105% for all sampling tubes. The variation in the surrogate recoveries is likely due to prolongedstorage of the tube prior to sampling. We are confident that any variability in the spiking results is not aresult of the sampling or post sampling storage procedures. However, as a conservative measure, theconcentration values were adjusted on the basis of the surrogate recoveries.Table 17.Summary of Laboratory dVC SpikingTube I.D. The cartridges were collected at the end of each run, wrapped in foil andplaced in a cooler for delivery to the analytical laboratory.ResultsVinyl ChlorideThe ambient air quality sample results for vinyl chloride were taken within the period of November 21, 2008and December 27, 2008, inclusive. The results of the vinyl chloride sampling program, for the eight exposedsamples, are summarized in Table 18.(111414_2ra_apr29-09_city_of_guelph.doc) - 56 -
