ADVERSE IMPACTS OF TRANSGENIC CROPS/FOODS :A COMPILATION OF SCIENTIFIC REFERENCES WITH ABSTRACTSsignificant increase compared with the control group. In human lymphocytes wefound statistically significant clastogenic effect AMPA at 1.8 mM compared withthe control group. In vivo, the micronucleus test rendered significant statisticalincreases at 200–400 mg/kg. AMPA was genotoxic in the three performed tests.Very scarce data are available about AMPA potential genotoxicity.http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S014765130800266221. Malatesta, M., Perdoni, F., Santin, G., Battistelli, S., Muller, S., Biggiogerra,M. (2008) : Hepatoma tissue culture (HTC) cells as a model for investigatingthe effects of low concentrations of herbicide on cell structure andfunction. Toxicol. in Vitro 22, 1853–1860.Previous studies on mice fed genetically modified (GM) soybean demonstratedmodifications of the mitochondrial functions and of the transcription/splicingpathways in hepatocytes. The cause(s) of these alterations could not beconclusively established but, since the GM soybean used is tolerant to glyphosateand was treated with the glyphosate-containing herbicide RoundupTM, thepossibility exists that the effects observed may be due to herbicide residues. Inorder to verify this hypothesis, we treated HTC cells with 1–10 mM Roundup andanalysed cellular features by flow cytometry, fluorescence and electron microscopy.Under these experimental conditions, the death rate and the general morphologyof HTC cells were not affected, as well as most of the cytoplasmic organelles. However, in HTC-treated cells, lysosome density increased and mitochondrialmembranes modified indicating a decline in the respiratory activity. Moreover, nucleiunderwent morpho-functional modifications suggestive of a decreased transcriptional/splicing activity. Although we cannot exclude that other factors than the presence ofthe herbicide residues could be responsible for the cellular modifications describedin GM-fed mice, the concordance of the effects induced by low concentrations ofRoundup on HTC cells suggests that the presence of Roundup residues could beone of the factors interfering with multiple metabolic pathways.http://forumrolnictwaekologicznego.pl/cms/images/Ciekawe%20artyku%C5%82y/Malatesta%20Hepatoma%20tissue %202008.pdf22. Eriksson, M., Hardell, L., Carlberg, M., Akerman, M. (2008) : Pesticideexposure as risk factor for non-Hodgkin lymphoma includinghistopathological subgroup analysis. International Journal of Cancer123,1657–1663.We report a population based case-control study of exposure to pesticides asrisk factor for non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). Male and female subjects aged 18-74 years living in Sweden were included during December 1, 1999, to April 30,2002. Controls were selected from the national population registry. Exposure todifferent agents was assessed by questionnaire. In total 910 (91 %) cases and1016 (92%) controls participated. Exposure to herbicides gave odds ratio (OR)1.72, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.18-2.51. Regarding phenoxyacetic acids(52)
