We’re always pleased to welcome new applications forPhD study.Unless you’ve already completed a postgraduate programme with arecognised research training element, you’ll be required to complete theSocial Science Research Training Programme at the School of Managementand Business. This will enable you to develop excellence in research skillsin order to complete your PhD successfully. You may also be required toundertake additional advanced study modules in your chosen discipline.As a research student at the School of Management and Business, you’llbe allocated a supervision team of two academic members of staff atAberystwyth. The main supervisor is usually a senior academic withconsiderable research experience in your proposed field of study. Theappropriateness of the match between student and supervisor is animportant element in the success of any PhD programme.The School of Management and Business provides all research studentswith a shared office and access to networked IT facilities. The Schoolmaintains a subscription to Datastream, provides access to a wide rangeof specialist research databases and supports major statistical andeconometric software packages. We warmly encourage all our researchstudents to attend our weekly research seminar and occasional researchaway-days. In addition, you’ll have the opportunity to participate in theannual Aberystwyth University subject colloquium and you’ll benefit fromfull membership of one of our active research centres at the School.Your Research ProposalAs part of your PhD application to study at Aberystwyth University’s Schoolof Management and Business, you’ll be expected to submit a researchproposal. Your research proposal will be assessed in relation to the researchpriorities and expertise represented in the research profile of the School.Your proposal should detail clearly and concisely the research questionsthat you wish to address and the methods that you propose to use in orderto develop the research.We expect that each PhD thesis will contain sufficient original researchmaterial to support at least three publishable academic papers. Aftersubmission of your PhD thesis you will be examined by a viva (oral)examination which is usually conducted by an external examiner and oneinternal examiner and is chaired by the Director of Research.Our Research ExpertiseManagementThe Management group in the School of Management and Business coversa wide range of research interests including strategic management, humanresource and leadership, knowledge management, e-commerce, logisticsmanagement, supply chain management, small business managementand entrepreneurship, public sector management and managementdevelopment.
