Aberystwyth University - ABWTH A40102 Accounting, Business, Economics,Finance, Management and Marketingoperations management, e-commerce andfemale entrepreneurship.Nerys Fuller-Love is the co-ordinator of theFemale Entrepreneurship programme in Wales.This programme is a joint venture with theWaterford Institute of Technology in Ireland andis funded by the EU INTERREG IIIA programme.The aim is the design and implementation ofan enterprise development programme aimedat increasing the level of sustainable hightech,high-growth and high added-value andmanaged business in the south-east of Irelandand south-west Wales. Twenty-five local femaleentrepreneurs have joined the project. Theirbusiness activities range from retail and tourismto agricultural products and jewellery. Theresearch team monitor the entrepreneurs andprovide a variety of support including training,mentoring, a conference, exchange visits andnetworking opportunities.Steve McGuire’s research interests are in the areasof international political economy, internationalbusiness and corporate political activity. He hasa particular interest in the interaction of firmsand governments in international trade, and haspublished a number of papers on the World TradeOrganisation. He has also written extensively ontechnology policy in Europe and the UnitedStates. He was previously a senior lecturer ininternational business at the University of Bath,and in 2009 he was a visiting professor at theCollege of Europe. He has also taught on degreeand executive development programmes atthe Audencia Nantes Management School, theUniversity of Bath and the Vlerick Leuven GentManagement School. His recent research hasbeen funded by the British Academy, the Daiwa– Anglo Japanese Foundation and the NuffieldFoundation. He serves on the editorial boards oftwo journals, Business and Politics and EuropeanJournal of International Management.Another focus of the Management group’s workis supporting organisations in the local andwider business community. As the majority ofthe businesses in the areas are SMEs, SMEs havebecome the focus for the group’s activities. TheManagement group has close links with theresearch centres in the School of Managementand Business, especially the Centre for Local andRegional Enterprise and the Centre for Researchin Marketing. Members of the group are alsojointly developing common research areassuch as knowledge management, e-commerce,small business management and operationsmanagement. The research carried out by thegroup is also linked into to the teaching ofManagement and Business at undergraduate andpostgraduate level. Members of the group teacha wide range of management modules includingPrinciples of Management, Human ResourceManagement, Supply Chain Management,Operations Management, and Small BusinessManagement. They have published in theJournal of Small Business Management, theJournal of Knowledge Management Research,and the International Journal of InformationManagement.MarketingThe Centre for Research in Marketing is now awell-established team of six researchers basedin the School of Management and Business.Marketing degrees taught at Aberystwyth drawheavily on the research of the Marketing team.This provides students with access to the latestresearch and research methods in Marketing.The Centre for Research in Marketing has fourkey themes: (i) Relationships in Marketing,(ii) International Marketing, (iii) SustainingInnovation and Change in MarketingOrganisations and (iv) Branding.The Centre publishes in UK based academicjournals such as the European Journal ofMarketing, Journal of Marketing Management,other European based journals such as theHarvard Business Manager which is published inGermany, as well as journals edited in the UnitedStates such as Journal of International Marketing,Journal of Services Marketing.The Marketing team’s research output is regularlypresented in conferences around the world andin recent years has attracted prizes at Europeanand United States conferences.EconomicsResearch expertise in relation to economicsencompasses local and regional enterprise,international economics, and the economicsof financial markets. The Centre for Localand Regional Enterprise is the focus of theSchool’s strong research interest in the studyof economies and enterprise at the local andregional levels. Examples of recent researchprojects include economic regeneration,sustainable development of rural economies,supply chains, organic products, agriculturalreform, and female entrepreneurship.International Economics: research relating tothe economic impact of international traderegulations and trade embargos, with particularfocus on the movement of genetically modifiedproducts and the economies of South EastAsia and Africa. Instances of internationalcollaboration include projects in India andSwitzerland as well as the ongoing researchproject on non-tariff barriers in EU-India trade.Economics of Financial Markets: researchrelating to the impact of the stock market onwider economies, the modelling of corporateinvestment decisions in relation to corporategovernance, structures, financial regulation andprofitability and the performance of mutualinvestment funds. Articles have appeared injournals such as Applied Economics, World Trade,World Economy, and the American Journal ofAgricultural Economics.Accounting and FinanceAt Aberystwyth, we have an excellentreputation for our research in Accounting andFinance, achieving international recognition.Students with an active interest in the area areencouraged to undertake one of our Mastersprogrammes in either Accounting and Financeor International Finance, which include researchtraining modules. Completion of one of thesepostgraduate “research training” programmescan lead directly onto a PhD programme linkedto recognition and potential funding from theEconomic and Social Research Council (ESRC).Research expertise in relation to Accountingis extensive and relates to both the public andprivate sector. Research is conducted withconsideration of legal frameworks in relationto accountability and disclosure regulations.Research also assesses both the structure ofaccounting systems and the economic impactthese have upon corporate governance andauditing practice. Recent doctoral studieshave focused on financial managementinternationally, including extensive analysis ofboth Sudan and Saudi Arabia.Research expertise in relation to Financeis concentrated in the Centre for EmpiricalFinance. PhD students work on specialisedempirical analysis relating to financial markets,credit risk and corporate finance. Recentresearch activity has focused on financialmarket microstructure, high frequency dataanalysis, credit ratings, credit derivatives andcapital structure, emerging markets financeand financial sector development in transitioneconomies. Publications can be found in theJournal of Business Finance and Accounting, theProfessional Investor, Qualitative Research inAccounting and Management, Journal of Post-Keynesian Economics, the Journal of Accountingand Organizational Change.
