Aberystwyth University - ABWTH A4010 Modes of <strong>Postgraduate</strong> StudyModes of <strong>Postgraduate</strong> StudyFull-timeAberystwyth offers anexceptional residential academicexperience if you wish to pursue full-timestudy. Students with study leave from employment orconsidering higher education as part of a career changewill find it easier to devote themselves to their studies inAberystwyth’s academic environment.Part-timeMany of our postgraduate courses may be studiedon a part-time basis so that you may continue yourcareer and studies. Part-time research students (LLMby research, MPhil, and PhD) do not normally have to beresident in Aberystwyth. Attendance requirements aredetermined by the relevant Head of Department.Where feasible, part-time research students are encouragedto attend the University’s Research Training Modules.Distance Learning[Information Studies and Law Only]Distance Learning is a term used to describe an alternativemethod of delivering taught courses through study packs andstudy schools as opposed to the traditional lecture or seminarbasedmethod.Our distance learning courses allow you to study for higher degrees without leaving yourjob or home, except to attend short residential study schools. This approach to learningencourages students to be highly motivated, to take responsibility for their own learning, and tomanage their time effectively.External or Split Research DegreesWe can be flexible to enable you to carry out research at your place of employment, either becauseyou want to examine a subject with particular relevance to your career or employer, or to accessspecialist equipment or resources (for example corporate archives) that the University does not have.This sort of programme is often particularly attractive to overseas academics who want to upgradetheir educational qualifications without leaving their university posts.Visiting Students andNon-qualification <strong>Postgraduate</strong> StudyThe University takes a very pragmatic approach to requests by individuals to attend the institutionas visiting students. Consequently, all requests are welcomed and details will be finalised by the<strong>Postgraduate</strong> Admissions Office and the relevant Department.Many of our taught courses aredesigned with a view to meeting currentemployment needs. The differentmodes of study described above exist toaccommodate and complement individualcareer paths. Research students may haveexternal supervisors in addition to thosein the institution. This will ensure that youwill receive advice and direction relevantto a future career.
