For the degree of MPhil a dissertation of around 60,000 words isrequired and for the degree of PhD a dissertation of around 100,000 words.Research supervision is currently available in the following areas: Childhoodstudies; girls’ and boys’ participation in subjects; mathematical education;gender and education; learning, teaching and pedagogical theory andpractice in higher education; social and cultural theories of education;social and spatial frameworks of knowledge production; professionaland personal development of teachers, academics and lecturing staff;bilingualism and teaching; education and popular knowledge; educationalpolicy; school inspections; science teaching; health education; HealthySchools; nutritional education; rural education; language acquisition;language planning and the specifically Welsh-related Cymdeithaseg Iaith(sociolinguistics) and Thafodieitheg (dialectology).
Aberystwyth University - ABWTH A40Education 57FacilitiesThe School of Education and Lifelong Learning is located in the Old Collegewhich is situated on the seafront, near the centre of Aberystwyth. It hasits own specialised library and resource centre, which provides a widerange of materials to support the work of students. These supplement themain University collections, which are housed on the Penglais campus.Full computing and study facilities are available in the Old College for theSchool’s students.ResearchAberystwyth has a long-established tradition of research in education.Staff in the School are engaged in both historical research and empiricalwork on different aspects of education in contemporary life.Funding OpportunitiesA limited number of scholarships are awarded from time to time toenable students to undertake research in areas which are relevant to theresearch interests of staff. The studentships cover the cost of fees, as well ascontributing towards other expenses.Entry RequirementsA good honours degree and professional experience in the world ofeducation are generally required for both the MPhil and PhD.Length of StudyMPhilA full-time candidate is required to complete a minimum period of oneyear of research and a part-time candidate is required to complete aminimum period of two years of research.A candidature lapses if a thesis is not submitted within three years of fulltimeresearch or within five years of part-time research.PhDA full-time candidature extends over a minimum period of two years in thecase of candidates who already possess a Master’s degree or three years inthe case of other candidates. Similarly, the minimum periods for part-timecandidates are three and five years respectively.In the case of full-time candidates a candidature will lapse after five yearsfrom the commencement of study, seven years in the case of part-timecandidates.
