All programmes are divided into Part One(coursework and exams) and Part Two (dissertation). The dissertation iscompleted from June to September following the completion of the taughtcomponent of the course. The method of teaching in all the programmesis by seminars led by specialist academic staff. Our Master’s courses aresuitable for students who want to develop an advanced understandingof International Relations or who wish to convert from related disciplines.Taught Master’s programmes are offered by the Department through twopathways, a Specialist (S) and a Research Training/Preparation (RT or RP)pathway. The Specialist pathway is the traditional Master’s degree whichoffers the opportunity to specialise in a particular area of the discipline.The Research Training/Preparation pathway is designed to emphasisesocial science or humanities research training as well as specialist provision,and is likely to be of most interest to students who have already studiedextensively in that particular subject area and who are planning toundertake a PhD following the completion of their Master’s course.Our admissions team can provide applicants with guidance on the relativesuitability of each pathway for their specific needs.Specialist Pathway Degree SchemesThe Specialist pathway is composed of four modules and a dissertation.Each programme has one (or in some cases two) core modules. Thepathway provides a greater depth of coverage in the chosen subject andis particularly useful for candidates who do not have a first degree in theprecise area of the chosen programme.The following Master’s programmes are offered through the Specialistpathway:• MScEcon European Politics• MScEcon Intelligence Studies and International History• MScEcon Intelligence and Strategic Studies• MScEcon International HistoryThe Research Training/Preparation pathways are based around compulsorycore modules, a dedicated programme of training/preparation in socialscience or humanities research and a dissertation. The Research Training/Preparation pathway is primarily intended for students who plan toundertake a PhD and allows exemption from the compulsory ResearchTraining/Preparation Programme required of all other first year researchstudents. This pathway may also appeal to applicants who may wish topursue a career which puts a premium on advanced research skills.The Department’s existing Research Training Master’s programmes havereceived recognition from the Economic and Social Research Council(ESRC) for the quality of research training provided.The following one-year Research Training Master’s degree schemes areoffered by the Department:• MScEcon European Politics• MScEcon Intelligence Studies• MScEcon International History• MScEcon International Politics• MScEcon International Relations Theory• MScEcon Postcolonial Politics• MScEcon Security Studies• MScEcon Strategic Studies• MScEcon Terrorism and International Relations• MScEcon Welsh Politics and Society (taught through the medium ofWelsh and English)The following one-year Research Preparation Master’s degree schemes areoffered by the Department:• MA Intelligence• MA International HistoryFollowing success in the 2005 ESRC Recognition Exercise, the Departmentis able to offer ESRC Quota awards which provide funding for UK andother EU students to undertake a Research Training pathway Master’sprogramme followed by a PhD. The Department is also able to supportapplications to the ESRC Open Studentship Competition. In addition to theESRC 1+3 awards, any UK or other EU student who completes a ResearchTraining Master’s is eligible to apply to the ESRC for PhD funding in theform of +3 Quota Awards allocated to the Department or the +3 OpenStudentship Competition.
