The Department teaches a number ofdedicated Master’s options each year which in recent years have included:Theory and Practice of International Political Community; Security andDefence Policy in the European Union; International Legitimacy since 1648;and ‘The Vietnam Syndrome’ and American Foreign Policy.Please note that we cannot guarantee that every option listed here will beavailable each year.Entrance RequirementsFor entry to all our Master’s programmes we generally require a minimumof an Upper Second Class Honours degree from a British university (orequivalent from a non-UK university). We do, however, consider candidateswho fall marginally below this requirement where there are extenuatingcircumstances.Departmental ResearchThe high quality of the Department’s research activities is world renownedand we hold a firm belief that students should be taught by specialistswho are themselves engaged in cutting-edge research. All staff are activelyengaged in research at the forefront of the discipline, and their variedspecialist knowledge provide students at Aberystwyth with access to anexceptional breadth of expertise which includes: war, peace and security;international theory; health and international relations; military history;intelligence studies; strategic studies; international ethics; postcolonialpolitics; political philosophy; gender; political leadership; Welsh politics;and a wide range of regional specialisations.Staff in the Department are also actively involved in the academiccommunity as a whole, engaging in a wide range of activities which helpto shape academic debates and advise policy makers. Their expertise isfrequently sought by national and international media.The Department encompasses the following research institutes andcentres:Centre for Health and International Relations (CHAIR)The Centre for Health and International Relations (CHAIR) was establishedin 2003, having attracted substantial funding to undertake a far-reachingprogramme of research on the relationships between health andinternational relations. CHAIR’s Director is Professor Colin McInnes whoholds the UNESCO Professorial Chair in HIV/AIDS, Education and Security.CHAIR’s research is envisaged as a means of putting the politics of globalhealth on the agenda of International Relations for the first time, a movethat itself reflects a growing recognition that health issues impact uponmany of the traditional areas of concern for the discipline. Health hasmajor implications for foreign and security policies, economic and humansecurity, as well as global trade, investment, and human rights. Whilstpursuing research on the general global politics of health the Centre forHealth and International Relations is currently actively working on threeprincipal research areas:
