The research of the Department is organised in researchgroups. All groups investigate and develop techniques and applications of intelligent systems andthere is much inter-group working, giving a high degree of coherence to the Department’s research.Under the heading ‘Centre for Advanced Software and Intelligent Systems’ the department isdesignated a Centre of Excellence by the Welsh Assembly’s Department of Enterprise, Innovation andNetworks, in recognition of the quality and industrial relevance of its work. Industrial collaboratorsinclude Ford, Jaguar Cars, Unilever, Daimler Benz, BAE Systems Plc., and Glaxo.Advanced Reasoning GroupThe Advanced Reasoning Group (ARG) aims to conduct innovativeresearch in qualitative and approximative reasoning, including methods ofknowledge representation, model generation and refinement, and modelbasedproblem solving. The ARG has an excellent track record of developing the scientific foundationsnecessary for building intelligent decision support systems, especially in crimedetection and prevention, engineering design analysis, and computer-baseddiagnosis. In particular, the group is well known for its ground-breakingwork on automated diagnostic and failure analysis for circuit design in theautomotive industry, and its invention of fuzzy-rough semantics-preservingtechniques for explicit knowledge model formulation and simplification. The group’s research also includes other advanced computational intelligenttechniques, e.g. evolutionary algorithms and meta-heuristics.The Department of Computer Science is housed in the Llandinam Building on the mainPenglais CampusResearch Topics• Multiple failure FMEA and sneak circuit analysis• Mode-based whole lifecycle automated system analysis• Qualitative model-based learning• Knowledge extraction over high dimensional data sets• Compositional modelling and preference handlingApplications of these techniques are wide-reaching, ranging from laboratorydemonstrations (e.g. Metabolic pathway identification and simulation, andcrime scenario construction and investigation) to commercial productions(e.g. automotive and aeronautical fault diagnosis, and consumer-sensitivedata analysis).
