The fundingavailable will depend on the type of course being undertaken and differentcategories of students may be eligible for certain types of funding.The following section provides a guide to these fundingopportunities but additional information may also be found on:www.aber.ac.uk/en/postgrad/funding-feesUnited Kingdom and otherEuropean Union Students1 Aberystwyth University Awards1.1 Aberystwyth <strong>Postgraduate</strong> Research Studentships (APRS)Competition (UK & EU)These awards are available for those wishing to study for a full-time PhDat Aberystwyth. To be eligible you must be a UK/EU fee payer and have orexpect to obtain at least upper second class honours in your first degree.There are no additional application forms for this competition but yourapplication for admission must be received before 1 March <strong>2011</strong>. See www.aber.ac.uk/en/postgrad/funding-fees/ for further information.Twelve successful applicants will receive a grant for up to three years whichwill cover their tuition fees and also provide them with a maintenanceallowance of approximately£13,290 and access to a travel and conferencefund.1.2 Departmental <strong>Postgraduate</strong> Research StudentshipsSome of these awards have been associated with teaching responsibilitiesin the department concerned. If you wish to know whether a Departmental<strong>Postgraduate</strong> Research Studentship is available for the research degree(MPhil, PhD) for which you have been accepted, you should contact the<strong>Postgraduate</strong> Admissions Tutor for the department concerned for moreinformation.2 External Funding BodiesThe major funding bodies for this University are as follows:Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC)Biotechnology and Biological Research Council (BBSRC)Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC)Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC)Natural Environment Research Council (NERC)Science and Technology Facilities Research Council (STFRC)In general, postgraduate funding for subjects within the Faculty of Artsmay be offered either by the AHRC or by the ESRC (funding by these bodiesis mutually exclusive, i.e. if a course is funded by the AHRC it will not befunded by the ESRC etc.) depending on the exact nature of the course.In the Faculty of Social Sciences postgraduate funding is offered either bythe ESRC or by the AHRC.In general, funding for postgraduate study in the Faculty of Science may beoffered by either the BBSRC, EPSRC, NERC, PPARC or DEFRA. Funding fromDEFRA has been offered in the past for study in Rural Studies and BiologicalSciences. Funding from BBSRC, ESPRC, NERC and PPARC has been offered inthe past for study in Biological Sciences, Computer Science, Earth Sciences,Mathematics and Physics.2.1 Arts and Humanities Research Council (UK and EU students only)The AHRC funds postgraduate study in the Arts and Humanities.
