Aberystwyth University - ABWTH A402 What the location has to offerWhat the location has to offer“Probably the best place in the world to be a student”International Student Barometer 2009The town is easily accessible by road and rail. It has a population of about13,500 people, but serves a wider local population of about 27,000. Asthe main market centre for mid and west Wales, it offers many modernretail outlets. However, Aberystwyth is not just a pleasant market town, itis very much a university town too. The University has a long and fruitfulrelationship with the town and students are welcomed by residents.

Thecoastline to the north and south is dotted withfine beaches, whilst inland there are expansesof rolling moorland cut through by woodedvalleys. Aberystwyth is located at the edge ofthe Snowdonia National Park and not far fromthe Pembrokeshire National Park, Britain’s onlycoastal National Park.In addition to the leisure opportunities, thissetting makes Aberystwyth an excellent place inwhich to study very varied environments: marineand freshwater, wetland, upland, agriculturaland forest sites.The University CampusThe main campus, Penglais, is one of the finest,and probably the most spectacularly locatedin Britain. Situated on Penglais Hill, it enjoyspanoramic views of the coast and the Irish Sea.The Llanbadarn Campus also enjoys an elevatedposition overlooking the Vale of Rheidol andthe coast.On the seafront is the original home of theUniversity, the Old College. This now housestwo academic departments and some of theUniversity’s administration.The proximity of the town to the campusesmeans that everything is within walking distance.For students, it is only a short walk from the hallsof residence, to their departments, to the sportsfacilities, and to the town centre without timeconsumingand costly commuting.
