17.1.3 Declaration of Playing Season. Each member institution shall determine the playing season foreach of the sports referenced under Bylaw 17.02.12. Declaration of the institution’s playing season in each suchsport shall be on file in writing in the department of athletics prior to the beginning of the institution’s playingseason for that sport. Changes in the declaration for a particular sport are permissible and also shall be filed inwriting in the office of the institution’s athletics director. (Revised: 1/11/89)17.1.4 Sports Subject to Segment Limitations. Playing-season-segment limitations are applicable toall team sports that are listed in Bylaw 17.02.12.1 and all individual sports listed in Bylaw 17.02.12.2. (Revised:1/10/91 effective 8/1/91, 1/16/93 effective 8/1/93)17.1.5 Mandatory Medical Examination. [#] Prior to participation in any practice, competition or outof-seasonconditioning activities (or in Division I, permissible voluntary summer conditioning in basketball andfootball or voluntary individual workouts pursuant to the safety exception), student-athletes who are beginningtheir initial season of eligibility and students who are trying out for a team shall be required to undergo a medicalexamination or evaluation administered or supervised by a physician (e.g., family physician, team physician). Theexamination or evaluation must be administered within six months prior to participation in any practice, competitionor out-of-season conditioning activities. In following years, an updated history of the student-athlete’smedical condition shall be administered by an institutional medical staff member (e.g., sports medicine staff,team physician) to determine if additional examinations (e.g., physical, cardiovascular, neurological) are required.The updated history must be administered within six months prior to the student-athlete’s participation in anypractice, competition or out-of-season conditioning activities for the applicable academic year. (Adopted: 1/8/07effective 5/1/07, Revised: 8/5/08)17.1.5.1 Sickle Cell Solubility Test. The examination or evaluation of student-athletes who are beginningtheir initial season of eligibility and students who are trying out for a team shall include a sickle cell solubilitytest, unless documented results of a prior test are provided to the institution or the prospective student-athleteor student-athlete declines the test and signs a written release. (Adopted: 4/29/10 effective 8/1/10, Revised: 5/3/10)17.1.6 Time Limits for Athletically Related Activities. In all sports, the following time limitationsshall apply: (Adopted: 1/10/91 effective 8/1/91)17.1.6.1 Daily and Weekly Hour Limitations—Playing Season. A student-athlete’s participation incountable athletically related activities (see Bylaw 17.02.1) shall be limited to a maximum of four hours per dayand 20 hours per week. (Adopted: 1/10/91 effective 8/1/91)17.1.6.1.1 Exception—Golf Practice Round. A practice round of golf may exceed the four-hoursper-daylimitation, but the weekly limit of 20 hours shall remain in effect. A practice round played on theday prior to the start of a intercollegiate golf tournament at the tournament site shall count as three hours,regardless of the actual duration of the round. (Adopted: 1/10/91 effective 8/1/91, Revised: 1/16/93)17.1.6.2 Weekly Hour Limitations—Outside the Playing Season. (Adopted: 1/10/91 effective 8/1/91,Revised: 1/10/95 effective 8/1/95, 1/14/97, 11/1/00, 10/31/02 effective 8/1/03, 3/10/04)(a) Sports Other Than Football. Outside of the playing season, from the institution’s first day of classesof the academic year or September 15, whichever occurs earlier, to one week prior to the beginning ofthe institution’s final examination period at the conclusion of the academic year, only a student-athlete’sparticipation in required weight training, conditioning and skill-related instruction shall be permitted. Astudent-athlete’s participation in such activities per Bylaw 17.02.1 shall be limited to a maximum of eighthours per week with not more than two hours per week spent on skill-related workouts. All countablerelated activities outside the playing season are prohibited one week prior to the beginning of the finalexamination period for the applicable academic term through the conclusion of each student-athlete’sfinal exams. (Revised: 4/27/06 effective 8/1/06, 9/22/06)(b) Bowl Subdivision Football. [FBS] Activities between the institution’s last contest and January 1 arelimited to required weight training, conditioning and the review of game film. A student-athlete’s participationin such activities shall be limited to a maximum of eight hours per week, of which not more thantwo hours per week may be spent on the viewing of film. All activities beginning January 1 and outsidethe playing season shall be conducted pursuant to Bylaw 17.9.6. (Revised: 12/15/06)(c) Championship Subdivision Football. [FCS] Activities between the institution’s last contest and thestart of summer conditioning are limited to required weight training, conditioning and the review ofgame film. A student-athlete’s participation in such activities shall be limited to a maximum of eighthours per week, of which not more than two hours per week may be spent on the viewing of film. Allactivities beginning with the start of summer conditioning and outside the playing season shall be conductedpursuant to Bylaws 17.9.6.2 and 17.9.6.4. (Revised: 12/15/06)17.1.6.2.1 Institutional Vacation Period and Summer.17.1.6.2.1.1 Sports Other Than Championship Subdivision Football. In sports other thanchampionship subdivision football, a student-athlete may not participate in any countable athleticallyrelated activities outside the playing season during any institutional vacation period and/or summer.Strength and conditioning coaches who are not countable coaches and who perform such duties on adepartment-wide basis may design and conduct specific workout programs for student-athletes, provid-230
