Today, companies like Sears, Rockbuck, Dow Channel and Dayton<br />

Hudson have adopted performance measurement <strong>of</strong> their bus<strong>in</strong>ess unit<br />

based on total operation and award<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>centive pay based on<br />

performance <strong>of</strong> competitors. Recently, more and more corporate<br />

boardrooms are look<strong>in</strong>g for other measures to reflect growth <strong>in</strong><br />

shareholders expectations and encourage strategic decision <strong>in</strong>stead <strong>of</strong><br />

short term plann<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

The need for the search for more variables especially qualitative<br />

variables that impact on bus<strong>in</strong>ess strategy and performance has<br />

<strong>in</strong>formed this study. The study therefore used some selected companies<br />

<strong>in</strong> KADUNA, Nigeria for this <strong>in</strong>vestigation. Also, the assessment <strong>of</strong> these<br />

variables <strong>in</strong> measur<strong>in</strong>g performance will assist bus<strong>in</strong>ess strategist <strong>in</strong><br />

mak<strong>in</strong>g sure that safe and sound strategy is based on adequate<br />

understand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> these variables.<br />

1.3 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY<br />

The objectives <strong>of</strong> this study will <strong>in</strong>clude:<br />

1. To elucidate greater understand<strong>in</strong>g on the measurement <strong>of</strong> firms’<br />

performance <strong>in</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess strategy implementation control<br />

2. To identify the key performance <strong>in</strong>dicators and assess their<br />

suitability <strong>in</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess strategy plann<strong>in</strong>g and implementation<br />

3. To evaluate the relative impact <strong>of</strong> each <strong>of</strong> these <strong>in</strong>dicators<br />

identified on the long run strategy <strong>of</strong> companies.<br />

4. To carry out a comparative analysis <strong>of</strong> both quantitative and<br />

qualitative performance.<br />
