In some <strong>in</strong>dustry, the threat <strong>of</strong> substitute products triggered<br />

consolidation by shift<strong>in</strong>g buyer’s needs, and thereby stimulat<strong>in</strong>g changes<br />

<strong>in</strong> services that are <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly subject to economies <strong>of</strong> scale. In other<br />

<strong>in</strong>dustries, changes <strong>in</strong> buyer’s taste, changes <strong>in</strong> the structure <strong>of</strong><br />

distributions channels, and <strong>in</strong>numerable <strong>in</strong>dustry trends may operate,<br />

directly or <strong>in</strong>directly, on the causes <strong>of</strong> fragmentation.<br />

Government or regulatory changes: This can force consolidation by<br />

rais<strong>in</strong>g standards <strong>in</strong> the products manufactur<strong>in</strong>g process beyond the<br />

reach <strong>of</strong> small firms through the creation <strong>of</strong> economies <strong>of</strong> scale.<br />

Recogniz<strong>in</strong>g the ultimate effects <strong>of</strong> such trends, and position<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

company to take advantage <strong>of</strong> them, can be an important way <strong>of</strong><br />

overcom<strong>in</strong>g fragmentation.<br />

Porter (1980) further stated that <strong>in</strong>dustry can be fragmented not only<br />

because <strong>of</strong> fundamental economic reasons, but because they are “stuck’<br />

<strong>in</strong> a fragmented state. Accord<strong>in</strong>g to Porter <strong>in</strong>dustries become stuck due<br />

to the follow<strong>in</strong>g reasons:<br />

Exist<strong>in</strong>g Firms Lack Resources: Sometimes the steps required to<br />

overcome fragmentation are evident, but exist<strong>in</strong>g firms lack the<br />

resources to make the necessary strategic <strong>in</strong>vestments. For example,<br />

there may be potential economies <strong>of</strong> scale <strong>in</strong> production, but firms lack<br />

the capital or expertise to construct large-scale facilities or to make<br />

required <strong>in</strong>vestments <strong>in</strong> vertical <strong>in</strong>tegration. Firm may also lack the<br />

resources or skills to develop <strong>in</strong> house distribution channels, <strong>in</strong> house<br />
