Ans<strong>of</strong>f (1965) stressed the commonality <strong>of</strong> approach that exists <strong>in</strong><br />

diverse organizational activities <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the products and markets that<br />

def<strong>in</strong>es the current and planned nature <strong>of</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess.<br />

Glueck (1980), def<strong>in</strong>ed strategy precisely as: “A unified, comprehensive<br />

and <strong>in</strong>tegrated plan designed to assure that the basic objective <strong>of</strong> the<br />

enterprise are achieved”. The three adjectives that Glueck used to<br />

def<strong>in</strong>e a plan made the def<strong>in</strong>ition quite adequate. ‘Unified’ means that<br />

the plan jo<strong>in</strong>s all the parts <strong>of</strong> an enterprise together; ‘comprehensive’<br />

means it covers all the major aspects <strong>of</strong> the enterprise, and ‘<strong>in</strong>tegrated’<br />

means that all parts <strong>of</strong> the plan are compatible with each other.<br />

M<strong>in</strong>tzberg (1987) def<strong>in</strong>es strategy as “a pattern <strong>in</strong> a stream <strong>of</strong> decision<br />

and actions” M<strong>in</strong>tzberg dist<strong>in</strong>guishes between <strong>in</strong>tended strategies and<br />

emergent strategies. An <strong>in</strong>tended strategy refers to the plans that<br />

managers develop, while emergent strategies are the actions that<br />

actually take place over a period <strong>of</strong> time. In this manner, an<br />

organization may start with a deliberate design <strong>of</strong> strategy and end up<br />

with another form <strong>of</strong> strategy that is actually realized.<br />

Porter (1980) made <strong>in</strong>valuable contribution to the development <strong>of</strong> the<br />

concept <strong>of</strong> strategy. His ideas on competitive advantages, the five-force<br />

model, generic strategies, and value cha<strong>in</strong> are quite popular. He op<strong>in</strong>es<br />
