RenewableHeating & CoolingEuropean Technology PlatformInfo Box 2Today most hybrid systems for heating and DHW are customised combinations ofsingle components assembled by the installer, like the example in Figure 21. Thissystem is typically applied in the existing building stock. A pellet boiler meets 100%of heating demand and serves as back-up for DHW supply, which is mostly providedby a solar thermal installation. The interface between the solar thermal componentand the pellets boiler is the DHW boiler. There exist a manifold of variations, amongstothers the integration of solar thermal into the heating circuit. The optimised combinationsof solar thermal and heat pump technologies are also analysed in IEA Task44 (www.task44.iea-shc.org).Figure 21: small-scale hybrid system composed of biomass boiler, solar thermalcollector and sensible thermal energy storage (credits: Walter Haslinger, Bioenergy2020)Figure 22: Example of an integrated and prefabricated hybrid system combining solarthermal collectors and an air source heat pump for delivery of heating and domestic hotwater to single family houses.
