2001. It is within walking distance to the 16th Street Mall, Market Street Station and the<br />
city's central business district. It consists of ground-floor retail, 5 floors of office space,<br />
two floors of condominiums, 50 restaurants and several hotels.<br />

Cited as one of the best examples of mixed-use development, South Village is a $247<br />
million (US) public-private partnership development in downtown Los Angeles. The 7.2acre<br />
multi-block will be completed in four phases. The first phase is a conversion of the<br />
three gas company buildings into 251 rental lofts and 22,500 sq. ft. of retail space. The<br />
second phase will include five levels of loft apartments above a 50,000 sq. ft.<br />
supermarket and an additional 10,000 sq. ft. of retail space. The third phase, scheduled to<br />
begin in 2004, will consist of 152 loft apartments and 25,000 sq. ft. of retail space. The<br />
final phase will add 520 condos and 30,000 sq., ft. of retail space.<br />
