- Case study: Town of Banff, AB<br />

The Town Banff developed a community energy plan. It includes the development of<br />

building design guidelines, a transportation management plan and a local action plan.<br />

The plan, if implemented, would have significant results.<br />

• Household energy expenditures would be reduced by 7 per cent.<br />

• Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per capita would be reduced by 20 per cent<br />

below 1998 levels.<br />

• Cumulative savings on energy dollars spent in the community would be<br />

approximately 20 millions dollars between 1996 and 2016.<br />

The City of Sudbury is developing a Community Energy Action Plan. It focuses on site<br />

design, land-use patterns and transportation policy. It is to be issued.<br />

- Case study: Portland, OR, USA<br />

The City of Portland’s Community Efficiency Energy Plan comprises a suite of energyconservation<br />

programs. It includes a number of residential, commercial, industrial, and<br />

institutional programs. The Smart Communities Success Story indicates significant<br />

results.<br />

• Energy cost savings identified are $1.2 million (US); cost savings realized are<br />

$710,000 (US).<br />

• Energy savings are 14.2 million kWh.<br />

• Jobs Created are over 100.<br />

• Environmental benefits are NOx emissions avoided of 9,096 lbs.; CO2<br />

emissions avoided are 12,780,000 lbs.<br />
