- Case study: Okotoks, AB
Okotoks is a rural town with a population of 12,000 in the metropolitan area of Calgary.
The municipality, working with the University of Calgary and a local real estate
developer, wrote an award winning municipal development plan (MDP) for growth
management and sustainable development. The plan sets out a long-range commitment
to live within the carrying capacity of the surrounding environment and preserving the
small town atmosphere using innovative planning and land use strategies. This includes
limiting water use; expansion of the urban boundary; and pursuing eco-efficiency through
urban design and recycling. The MDP plan focuses on: land-use and urban design;
mixed residential housing; transportation systems; open space/urban forest; regional
partnerships and planning; planning for a socially responsible community and long term
affordability.
