Natural Resources Canada – Community Energy Systems
- Case study: Steyerberg, Germany
The Lebensgarten eco-village was founded in 1984, when a Berlin businessman bought a
dilapidated housing estate and he and six others decided to initiate an ecological and
spiritual centre there. The complex has 65 row houses and various community buildings.
The original site was built in 1939 as housing quarters for an ammunition factory. After
the Second World War, it was used as a barracks by the English army.
• Reuse of existing buildings saves energy in construction and materials, and
makes efficient use of existing infrastructure.
In 1996, the Lebensgarten eco-village was identified by the UN as a Global Best Practice
for Improving the Living Environment.
