L.1.6.6 Solar housing
- Case study: Wallisellen, Switzerland
Above: Passive House near Montreal, Quebec
The International Energy Agency is undertaking an international study to increase the use
of solar energy in housing to more than 5 per cent of the housing stock by the year 2010.
Canada is participating in the study that runs until 2005. The study will look at many
housing types, different solar technologies, and retrofit possibilities. It will provide a
L.1.6.7 Healthy House
- Case study: Toronto, ON
Rolf Paloheimo of Creative Communities built the Toronto Healthy House, designed by
Martin Leifhebber Architect, in 1996. It is also known as the Codicile house. It is two
semi-detached infill houses that are completely self-sufficient from the municipal water
and wastewater servicing and electrical grids. The Codicile harvests its own energy,
collects and purifies rainwater for drinking and reuses and biologically treats its own
wastewater.
• It uses 10 times less water than a conventional house.
• Energy savings result from use of photovoltaic and solar panels.
• Intensification reduces sprawl.
• The first floor is ideal for a home-based business.
