Natural Resources Canada – Community Energy Systems
L.1.6.4 Expandable, Envirohome
- Case study: Montreal, QC
Sevag Pogharian Design built an innovative detached home that can be altered and
expanded as the needs of the family change, including provisions for an accessory
apartment. It is also an Envirohome, meeting stringent energy efficiency, indoor air
quality, and resource conservation requirements.
• Environmental benefits are demonstrated through the use of recycled
materials, environmentally responsible approaches to landscaping and
construction, and products designed to reduce indoor pollutants and allergens.
• Infill development makes efficient use of land, and existing infrastructure,
reducing sprawl.
• Infill encourages downtown revitalization and economic development.
• Housing affordability is increased because the second unit can contain a
home-based business or an accessory apartment; the apartment could be used
to house senior family members or generate income to assist in mortgage
payments.
