Briefing notes have been provided by Education Scotland for Headteachers (These areavailable by choosing the appropriate sectorial inspection option on the ‘About Inspectionsand Reviews’ side menu athttp://www.educationscotland.gov.uk/inspectionandreview/index.asp)They have advised that these briefing notes be made available to inform all members ofstaff.Prior to the inspectionAt the beginning of the notification period, a confidential questionnaire will be distributedto pupils, parents, and teaching and non-teaching staff. In a nursery school, aquestionnaire will be sent to parents and staff only.Schools/centres should note that advice about the questionnaires is available on theEducation Scotland website (‘Headteacher guidance on issuing pre-inspectionquestionnaires’). (This is available by choosing the appropriate sectorial inspection optionon the ‘About Inspections and Reviews’ side menu athttp://www.educationscotland.gov.uk/inspectionandreview/index.asp)In the Education Scotland briefing notes, Headteachers are given a list of documentation,including the self-evaluation summary form, required by the inspection team before and onarrival (Appendices 2, 3 and 4). This is available from the Education Scotland website(“Briefing notes for headteachers of ”).Education Scotland has stated that there is no mandatory requirement for the localauthority to provide a pre-inspection report on an individual school/centre. For inspectionsthat focus on 3-18 curricular area, a department/faculty will be asked to complete a selfevaluationproforma.<strong>EIS</strong> ADVICEWhat happens if I’m not happy about how the questionnaires are distributed and managedor how the content of the questionnaires are kept confidential?Members should note that the questionnaires are confidential as the following advice tostaff from Education Scotland indicates:-“When you have filled in your form please put it in the prepaid envelope provided, seal itand either return it directly to Education Scotland or to the school office (who will send it toEducation Scotland) by .(‘Your views about the school - Questions for teachers and other staff who work directlywith children and young people’ Questionnaire: available from Education Scotlandwebsite.)If a member believes questionnaires are not being treated confidentially, they shouldadvise the school representative who can raise the matter with the local associationsecretary in the first instance.Members have the right also to advise the Managing Inspector of this concern whichshould also be indicated on the <strong>EIS</strong> monitoring form.How will my workload be affected by preparing for the inspection?Members are advised to access the Education Scotland website to ensure that they knowwhat information will be required for their particular sector. (Normally - “Briefing notes forheadteachers of… (sector)”: Appendix 4).The amount of information required by the Inspection Team prior to the inspection isregarded as minimal. However, the information requested should be available in the52September 2012
