Metering Devices, Protective Relays, Software and ConnectivityProtective Relays22.4Overcurrent ProtectionThe EDR-3000 providescomplete three-phase andground protection withseparate elements andsettings. The relay can beused with CTs from 1 to50,000A of primary currentand 1 or 5A of secondarycurrent. The CT ratio can beset independently for phaseand ground, allowing theground element to beconnected in either theresidual or the separateground CT configuration, shown on below.Separate Zero SequenceGround CT ConnectionCB-52abcGND2 35 68 950/5150G/51G11 12EDR-3000Zone Selective Interlocking(Phase and Ground)Note: Refer to the OrderingInformation and (Catalog OrderingInformation) for optional features, see Page 353.Zone Selective interlockingis a protection function tominimize equipment damageresulting from a phase or aground fault in an area wherelong time and/or short timedelay is in use. When the “Ground ZoneInterlocking” feature isutilized, an immediate trip isinitiated when the fault is inthe breaker’s zone ofprotection, regardless of itspreset time delay. When the“Phase Zone Interlocking”feature is utilized, the timeovercurrent elements workas follows. The instantaneousphase element will initiate animmediate trip when the faultis in the breaker's zone ofprotection, regardless of itspreset time delay. For thetime overcurrent phaseelement, the current sensedby the EDR-3000 mustexceed 1.5 times the pickupsetting for the zone selectiveinterlocking to initiate animmediate trip signal whenthe fault is in the breaker’szone of protection.Upstream EDR-3000protected breakers arerestrained from trippingimmediately by aninterlocking signal from thedownstream EDR-3000 relay. This interlocking signalrequires only a pair ofwires from the downstreambreaker to the upstreambreaker. It provides standardcoordinated tripping whenthe fault is located outsidethe zone of protection. In the sample zoneinterlocking system shownbelow, circuit breakers A,B and C are equipped withEDR-3000 overcurrent relays.Fault Location Zone 3Note: For the time overcurrentphase element, the currentsensed by the EDR-3000 mustexceed 1.5 times the pickupsetting for the zone selectiveinterlocking to initiate animmediate trip signal whenthe fault is in the breaker's zoneof protection. If a fault occurs at a pointin Zone 3, the EDR-3000of downstream breaker Csenses the fault and sendsa restraining signal to theupstream EDR-3000 offeeder breaker B. Havingreceived this signal, theEDR-3000 of feeder breakerB withholds its tripcommand. As a result, onlydownstream breaker C istripped.Fault Location Zone 2Note: For the time overcurrentphase element, the currentsensed by the EDR-3000 mustexceed 1.5 times the pickupsetting for the zone selectiveinterlocking to initiate animmediate trip signal when thefault is in the breaker’s zoneof protection. If a fault occurs at a point inZone 2, the EDR-3000 offeeder breaker B senses thefault and sends a restrainingsignal to the upstream EDR-3000 of main breaker A. TheEDR-3000 of the downstreambreaker C does not see thisfault since it is situated on thedownstream side of the fault. As a result, the EDR-3000 ofdownstream breaker C doesnot send a restraining signalto the EDR-3000 of feederbreaker B. Since it did notreceive a restraining signalfrom the EDR-3000 ofdownstream breaker C, theEDR-3000 of feeder breakerB identifies that the fault is inZone 2 and immediately tripsfeeder breaker B, regardlessof its time setting.Fault Location Zone 1Note: For the time overcurrentphase element, the currentsensed by the EDR-3000 mustexceed 1.5 times the pickupsetting for the zone selectiveinterlocking to initiate animmediate trip signal when thefault is in the breaker's zone ofprotection. If a fault occurs in Zone 1,no restraining signal isreceived by the Digitripof main breaker A. As aresult, main breaker A isimmediately tripped by itsEDR-3000 overcurrent relay, regardless of its time setting.222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222222Sample Zone Selective Interlocking SystemVolume 3—Power Distribution and Control Assemblies CA08100004E—December 2010 www.eaton.com 351
