Metering Devices, Protective Relays, Software and ConnectivityConnectivity Options22.5General Wiring Guidelines—RS-485 NetworkWhen communicating overRS-485 networks to Eatonproducts, the following●General Wiring Guidelinesshould be used.Rule 1: Cable Selection—Twisted Shielded Pair (TSP)Note: Cables specificallydesigned for RS-485 applicationsare highly recommended.The RS-485 bus is a length ofTwisted Shielded Pair (TSP)that includes a thirdconductor (used for thecommon wire), a braidedshield accompanied by adrain wire, and nominalimpedance of 120 ohms.● Belden Wire and CableCompany Part Number3106A or equivalentRule 2: Cable IntermixingAny cable in the Belden3106A family can beintermixed with each otherin the Modbus network.Rule 3: System Topology,Size and CapacityStrict daisy chain must beadhered to. A strict daisychain configuration is onewhere the transmissionline connects from oneRS-485 receiver to thenext. The transmission lineappears as one continuousline to the RS-485 driver● Maximum 32 devices●Line termination:Maximum cable lengths of4000 feet (1219m); longerbus lengths will slow thedata rateRule 4: Cable SplicingThe prime goal is to create asecure electrical connectionwhile minimizing exposure toelectrical transients. Ferrulesare used to dress cable ends.Most devices have built-interminal blocks that can beused for splicing. Additionally,terminal blocks should beutilized when splicingelsewhere in the gear orfacility to ensure a secureelectrical connection.RS-485 Wiring Guide—Three Terminal DevicesNotesTransceiver (XCVR) Common Connected to:I = IsolatedNI = Non IsolatedE = Earth GroundCenter terminal on InsulGard (marked with Ground symbol) is for shield splicing only and is electrically floating.Rule 5: Cable ShieldingThe cable shielding and outerjacket should not be strippedback beyond 1-1/2 inches.Three-pole terminal blocksare used to ensure acontinuous metallic shieldground path. To ensure asecure electrical connectionwhen daisy chaining devicesthat have built-in two-poleterminal blocks, mechanicallycrimp sleeves onto the twoshield path drain wires.Rule 6: Cable GroundingGround the communicationnetwork at only one point inthe network, preferably byterminating the drain wireto ground at the EOL node(same location as the EOLR).A solid earth ground isaccomplished by connectingthe shield ground path’s drainwire to a #14 AWG or largermulti-stranded wire that hasan impedance path of 1 ohmor less to a known earthground.Note: The building electricalground may not be effectivesince it may travel through manyconnections and considerabledistances before reaching earthground. In such cases, a newground path will be required sincethe effectiveness of this shieldearth ground connection willaffect the integrity of datatransferred over the cable.Rule 7: Cable TerminationEnd of Line Resistors (EOLR)are necessary to maintainsignal strength and minimizereflections. EOLR mustmatch the impedance of theTSP. Two EOLR are neededand should be located at bothends of the RS-485 bus.
