Excellence – Exceeding expectations through teamwork and innovation.1. Quality careEach member of the staff is expected to provide the best possible care for his or herpatients. This includes maintaining the necessary skills, obtaining adequate continuingeducation, exercising good judgment, and communicating effectively with otherpractitioners and staff.2. Behavior (verbal or physical abuse, sexual harassment)Quality medical care is a team effort involving physicians, nurses, and otherinterdisciplinary staff members. We expect all staff members to behave in a professionaland respectful manner toward members of the healthcare team. Verbal abuse destroys theeffectiveness of the team and adversely affects patient care. Verbal abuse—yelling,swearing, insulting, or threatening anyone—is unacceptable and will result in disciplinaryaction by the medical staff. Similarly, inappropriate physical behavior—throwing orslamming objects, damaging hospital property, violent gestures—will not be tolerated.Sexual harassment—unwanted advances, inappropriate touching—is equallyunacceptable.3. Medical record completionThe medical record is an important tool of documentation and communication. It isexpected that each staff member will write legibly, complete dictations and sign theircharts in a timely fashion, according to the medical staff rules.4. Participation in peer reviewMeaningful peer review is vital to maintaining quality care in the hospital. All membersof the medical staff are expected to participate in peer review, as defined by theirrespective division.5. Practitioner impairmentAll practitioners need to be physically and mentally able to perform their patient careduties. Any condition that might affect his or her ability to provide care for patients mustbe reported to the division chair.Practitioner Signature: ________________________Maintaining Professional Boundaries and Respecting Patients’ Privacy During PatientExaminationsAMA Statement on Professional Boundaries:The American Medical Association Council of Ethical and Judicial Affairs (1989) addressedprofessional boundaries and stated that sexual misconduct violates the trust that a patient placesin the physician and is unethical.
