PEDIATRICS/OBA. Service Goals:The success of this service will require the senior resident to carefully manage thedemands of the various services against his/her resources, assign duties, adjust forvolume and acuity, have the full support of the attendings and the understanding of thenurses. Open communication will be critical. On-time Rounds must be maintained to getthrough the teaching and supervision tasks of the morning. Finally, there will be timeswhen the residents will not be able to cover all patients and attendings on OB may berequired to deliver patients; this option should be uncommon.The OB component provides intensive obstetrical training, giving residents a broadknowledge and experiential base in normal and abnormal obstetrics. <strong>Resident</strong>s will learnto diagnose and manage common OB problems, obtain consultations as needed and makereferrals when appropriate to facilities that can provide services not available locally.<strong>Resident</strong>s are expected to achieve the full set of defined Obstetrics Competencies overthe course of their three years’ experiences. (See also Residency Goals andCompetencies)The pediatric in-patient component provides intensive pediatric training throughout the 3years of residency training. <strong>Resident</strong>s will diagnose and manage common pediatricproblems and will learn to recognize uncommon problems, to obtain pediatric andneonatology consultations and to make referrals to facilities, which can provide servicesnot available at Mercy Medical Center. <strong>Resident</strong>s are expected to develop the full set ofdefined Pediatric Competencies over the course of their three years’ experiences. Service Description:Obstetrics<strong>Resident</strong>s will spend a limited amount of time providing prenatal and postpartum care ofthe Mercy Obstetrics Clinic patients, due to time constraints and other hospital duties.The residents will however, actively participating in all clinic deliveries. The patientpopulation consists of a spectrum of patients from the uncomplicated to the verycomplex. The experience continues throughout all three years on rotations and during theon-call periods. Preceptors are ultimately responsible for the care delivered by theresidents in the clinic and hospital, and are assigned for 24-hour shifts to supervise theseareas in compliance with the Mercy Medical Center Policy on <strong>Resident</strong> Supervision.They are expected to be physically present at all deliveries, and to supervise MercyMaternity Center for standard procedures. Teaching rounds at the hospital shouldaddress all current L&D, postpartum and GYN patients as well as provide time to planthe coming day’s events.
