78APPENDIX A BUCKET MIXER INSTRUCTIONSInstructions outl<strong>in</strong>e the correct setup <strong>and</strong> use <strong>of</strong> the large bucket mixer used dur<strong>in</strong>g theSuperpave mix design process <strong>and</strong> the mak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> the APA test samples. These <strong>in</strong>structions havebeen derived from those developed dur<strong>in</strong>g research performed by Michael S. Hughes (Hughes,1999).MIXER SETUPInstall paddle arm so that it sits parallel to the axis about which the bucket rotates. Securepaddle to paddle arm so that both edges <strong>of</strong> the paddle sit flush to the side <strong>of</strong> the bucket <strong>and</strong>blade touches bottom <strong>of</strong> bucket.MIXING PROCEDUREHeat 5-gallon bucket <strong>and</strong> paddle attached to paddle arm <strong>in</strong> oven set to mix<strong>in</strong>g temperature.Allow sufficient time for bucket <strong>and</strong> paddle to achieve proper temperature.Remove bucket <strong>and</strong> paddle from oven, weigh, <strong>and</strong> add heated aggregate <strong>and</strong> asphalt.Place bucket <strong>in</strong> mixer basket.Remove paddle from oven <strong>and</strong> slide over paddle secur<strong>in</strong>g rod.Turn on mixer, this should allow paddle to be pushed down to touch the bottom <strong>of</strong> thebucket.Unlock mixer from upright position <strong>and</strong> tilt bucket forward.While hold<strong>in</strong>g onto paddle arm, tilt mixer as far as possible be<strong>in</strong>g careful not to spillcontents.Rock bucket back <strong>and</strong> forth to aid <strong>in</strong> mix<strong>in</strong>g.After the aggregate <strong>and</strong> asphalt has been thoroughly mixed, lock mixer back <strong>in</strong>to uprightposition.Turn <strong>of</strong>f the mixer.Pull paddle <strong>of</strong>f <strong>of</strong> secur<strong>in</strong>g rod <strong>and</strong>, with a hot spatula, completely scrape all <strong>of</strong> the material<strong>of</strong>f the paddle <strong>in</strong>to the bucket.Remove bucket from mixer <strong>and</strong> transfer contents.Scrape the <strong>in</strong>side <strong>of</strong> the bucket thoroughly <strong>and</strong> transfer this material. Weigh bucket <strong>and</strong>paddle <strong>and</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>ue to remove material until the paddle <strong>and</strong> bucket weigh with<strong>in</strong> 5 grams<strong>of</strong> the orig<strong>in</strong>al weight.
