Who can receive a grant?Grants are normally given to local organisations <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> test<strong>in</strong>g new solutions, <strong>in</strong> learn<strong>in</strong>g fromexperience and <strong>in</strong> be<strong>in</strong>g agents of last<strong>in</strong>g change. These organisations must share the Foundation'sand AKDN's goals <strong>in</strong> the fields of health, education, rural development and strengthen<strong>in</strong>g of civilsociety. If no established group exists, the Foundation occasionally creates new organisations totackle particularly important problems.Grant sizeThe AKDN’s annual budget <strong>for</strong> non-profit development activities <strong>in</strong> 2010 was approximately US$ 625million.Examples of recent grantsSummary of current programme activities:Afghanistan: Master-apprentice tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g centres <strong>in</strong> Kabul and Herat; music research and archiv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>Herat and Badakhshan; outreach to schools, public recitals, <strong>in</strong>strument-mak<strong>in</strong>g workshop.Kazakhstan: Nationwide implementation of “Murager” (Heritage) programme, a system <strong>for</strong> preserv<strong>in</strong>gand transmitt<strong>in</strong>g traditional per<strong>for</strong>mance and composition through mass education.Kyrgyzstan: Countrywide master-apprentice tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g programme; methodology development <strong>for</strong>national music education; creative youth laboratory <strong>for</strong> tradition-based musical <strong>in</strong>novation.Tajikistan: Academy of Maqom, elite tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g aimed at revitaliz<strong>in</strong>g Tajik classical music; masterapprenticeprogramme <strong>in</strong> all regions of Northern Tajikistan; <strong>in</strong>strument-mak<strong>in</strong>g workshops.Pakistan: Pilot <strong>in</strong>itiative <strong>for</strong> GBC (Gilgit-Baltistan-Chitral) to support master-apprentice tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g;regional music & arts festival <strong>in</strong> Hunza l<strong>in</strong>ked to record<strong>in</strong>g, collect<strong>in</strong>g & archiv<strong>in</strong>g; <strong>in</strong>ternationalpresentations of <strong>in</strong>digenous music traditions of Northern Areas.Application procedureThere are no <strong>for</strong>mal application procedures. Be<strong>for</strong>e develop<strong>in</strong>g full proposals, enquiries should bemade to the Foundation office <strong>in</strong> the country where the proposal orig<strong>in</strong>ates or where the project wouldbe executed. Please note that a precondition <strong>for</strong> fund<strong>in</strong>g is the existence of an office, <strong>in</strong> the samecountry, which can evaluate and monitor projects we fund.RestrictionsThe Foundation is largely an implement<strong>in</strong>g organisation rather than a grant-fund<strong>in</strong>g agency. Grantsare normally given to local organisations <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> test<strong>in</strong>g new solutions, <strong>in</strong> learn<strong>in</strong>g fromexperience and <strong>in</strong> be<strong>in</strong>g agents of last<strong>in</strong>g change.
